Income

Income provides information on a region’s level of prosperity and can highlight inequality and cost of living differences. Erratic growth, no-growth, or long-term decline in this indicator is generally an indication of a struggling economy. The benchmarks below indicate median household income.

The Median Income Table and Median Income Chart provide income for each region over time. The table is expandable to include zip code level data and selecting a location on the table will filter the Median Income Chart. Median income will differ slightly from the actual (in Benchmarks) because income data is derived from zip code data and then averaged to the county level. In addition, zip code boundaries do not necessarily align with county boundaries.

The map below shows median household (HH) income by zip code. The income values do not consider cost of living, taxes, or transfer payments.

Questions to ask the data…

  • Which regions have experienced income decline or growth? How might this determine where you locate services?

  • How does median income change compare to other regions? Why might this disparity exist?
