Project Goals

The purpose of this project is to reveal how learning outcomes from the study of art history translate into different forms of practice for students and alumni.

What are the tangible outcomes that students experience as they incorporate their art historical knowledge into other areas of study or work?

Synthesizing Practices answers this question by examining how students, through their study of art history, learn to:

    • prioritize visual observations
    • critically analyze issues
    • research, write, and present ideas to groups
    • contextualize ideas within a historical framework.

Using the multimedia approach of video (moving images + audio), Synthesizing Practices aims to provide a model with which to increase the visibility of art history at the University of Washington by documenting student experience and presenting it in an accessible and relevant format. Synthesizing Practices seeks to elevate student voices so they might speak about the application and practice of art history in their own contemporary experience.

The videos may serve as a future model for prospective student information sessions, for publicity materials, and as content for the University of Washington SoA+AH+D website and/or the UW College of Arts & Sciences arts.uw site. Videos of students and alumni talking about how they practice their art historical knowledge in different spaces can highlight the relevance of the discipline beyond its traditional teaching, research, or curatorial work in universities and museums.

Please consider collaborating with me in Synthesizing Practices as a participant. Your story is important. Learn how you can participate.
