Learning Design Toolkit

A guide about content development approaches and process. Also includes writing style guidance.

A variety of templates for developing content outlines, typically used for in-person and virtual content. These are examples gathered from writers across Cultivate Learning. When working with an Instructional Designer, see also the Online Course Map.

A slide deck and Asana form to collect course information that impact the design of the online course, such as audience, delivery method, media strategy, learning technology, and more.

The course map is a document where content creators describe the basics of the course or modules (description, goal, objectives). It also contains the outline of the course by listing all the topics and elements. The outline indicates where all the items (content, activities, assignments) for the course are listed and cross-referenced with the course objectives and learning objectives. It helps instructional designers understand the main structure and components in the course and how they all support the learning experience. Sometimes there is no time to fully create a course map and content creators use a simple outline instead of the course map.

A storyboard tells the story of the training course. It’s a document, slide deck, or prototype in which the content developer lays out the content for the eLearning course that they plan to create. This document is created in collaboration with the instructional designer.

When a project does not have a project charter, the slides help an instructional designer gather information about the project team, roles, timeline, and the same information collected in the Course Design Form.

The content grid is usually a Word document that contains additional content that might not be easily captured in the storyboard, such as the content for the interactives, knowledge checks, etc. Sometimes, the instructional design and developers create a visual storyboard in PPTx as a prototype for the training and use the content grid to fill out the specific content for each of the slides and interactives. Some projects use only visual storyboards or content grid documents, and others use both.

This document is created after the course production ends and it lays out the location of the production files, important links, and course information needed to update the course in the future.

A demonstration of one of the online platforms we use. This demo shows how to create dynamic lessons using built in interactives, blocks, and translate courses.

Project Workflow Toolkit

Find documents to help plan the project scope, timeline, and budget. Also find helpful tools for developing content, communications, design, and instructional design.

The purpose of this document is to have a single source of information describing the project, deliverables, team, and ways of working together.

The charter document can be started by the project manager and should be completed by the full team as the project progresses. Unit directors and funding partners should approve the charter.

Consider the project charter as a living document which should be referred to and updated on a regular basis.
