There are two tools in the Canvas LMS that help students read and understand course content more easily.
This tool is automatically available and accessed by clicking the downward arrow to the right t can also be accessed when the file is opened in Canvas. Students can then choose a format that works best for them. The Microsoft Immersive Reader (described below) is included as one of the available options.

Video (Vendor, 58 seconds): Ally Alternative Formats (Canvas)
You will also see a symbol on Canvas pages and assignments.
This tool is included automatically in the Ally Alt format tool for Canvas pages and files, but needs to be enabled in your course settings to use on other Canvas content such as assignment and discussion descriptions, announcements, etc. Note: Even if a file has accessibility issues (like missing headings, scanned text, or no alt text for images), Ally will still try to create alternative formats. However, the quality of those formats may be limited.
The Immersive Reader has useful features that include the following.
Read Aloud: Converts text to speech so students can listen to the content.
Adjustable Voice Settings: Change speed and select different voices.
Focus Mode: Highlights individual lines or blocks of text to reduce distractions.
Font and Text Size: Adjust font style, size, and spacing.
Background Colors/Themes: Change background to improve contrast or reduce visual stress.
