Students participating in Engineering Japan pay a program fee of $3,800. No tuition is charged for the program. The program fee covers the cost of instruction and credits, housing, and program activities such as excursions and tours. Students will also be charged the UW Study Abroad Fee.
The program fee and UW Study Abroad Fee will be charged to the UW student account on the Summer Quarter tuition timeline and must be paid by the Summer Quarter tuition payment deadline.
The estimated program fee will be $5,000-6,000. Specific program fee details for the Summer A 2022 program will be available by the start of Autumn Quarter 2021.
Tohoku University sometimes has funding from the Japanese government for JASSO scholarships, which are around $700 per month. This scholarship is competitive, and if funding is available, the application is part of the secondary exchange application process.
The program fee does not cover additional expenses such as international airfare, food, personal spending, student abroad insurance, passport/visa fees, etc. These costs will vary for each student but we will provide an estimate of these costs below to help with planning.
Students can request summer financial aid to help cover program costs. This will likely involve submitting a separate FAFSA for summer aid. Learn more about financial aid in summer here.
Most forms of student financial aid can be applied toward the costs of a study abroad program. Visit the UW Study Abroad Financial Aid page for more information on applying your financial aid toward the costs of study abroad.
