Think about it. Teachers typically manage time and establish expectations of behavior in their classrooms. They redirect students to pay attention or to reattempt a task when required. Overall, they provide much-needed structure and expectations regarding behavior and engagement in school.
UVA's teachers cannot do very many of those things remotely. Instead, those aspects of the teacher's role shift to the Learning Coach in the student's learning environment -- not necessarily in real-time because that is not always practical, but most certainly daily.
It would be nice, but it is not reasonable to expect a young person to be 100% self-directed. With rare exceptions, students require an adult to monitor their engagement and progress in school. They need someone to encourage them and keep them focused on the correct tasks. Even the most mature, highly organized high school student requires direction, guidance, and encouragement.
The bottom line is this. Each child is different, but in varying degrees -- depending on age and maturity -- all of our students require structure, guidance, encouragement, and monitoring in the learning environment. That's where the Learning Coach comes in.
Although an entire section of the onboarding course ("Phase III -- Detailed Learning Coach Training") is dedicated to extensive training for our Learning Coaches, the following videos and audios introduce your role by highlighting important topics. Some of the content comes directly from a few of our Learning Coaches. After all, the best teachers quite often are one's peers.

Communication with our school is essential for online students and their Learning Coaches. UVA uses multiple electronic communications platforms that serve different purposes. For example, when the semester begins, students and Learning Coaches will have Canvas accounts that include an Inbox for communicating with the faculty; similar to e-mail. You will learn more about the Canvas Inbox when you are trained on the Canvas learning platform in a few weeks.
UVA uses two additional electronic communications platforms that are not part of the Canvas learning platform: Remind and Blynx. Although Remind is available for students and Learning Coaches, Blynx is strictly for Learning Coaches. Remind is the primary communications platform for your Learning Coach Support team during the school year.

Remind is a messaging platform that allows two-way communication between the school and our families. Remind messages are received via text and/or email or they are received via the Remind app. It is a very convenient method of communication.
Shortly before a student begins, UVA creates Remind accounts for new students and their parents or guardians. When designated Learning Coaches are approved by Student Services, your Learning Coach Support team will create the Remind account for the designated Learning Coach.
The student's account will receive messages via the assigned school email address. You will learn more about accessing the school email account during the final phase of your onboarding shortly before school begins.
The account for the parent, guardian, and/or designated Learning Coach will be established with the mobile phone number and email address that were provided on the application for enrollment or on the Designated Learning Coach Agreement form. If you choose not to use the app, messages will arrive via text and/or email. If you choose to use the app, messages will be delivered to the app.
If the adult has a Remind account from a previous school, the account will be updated to include your new UVA subscription. If the adult already has the Remind app, the app will update with your UVA subscription after you launch it. Your Learning Coach Support team will let you know when your UVA subscription has been established.

Please do not attempt to add UVA to an existing Remind account on your own. Trying to update your account from your end could prevent your UVA subscription from being created correctly.
If you blocked Remind messages from being delivered to your phone number at a previous school, you will only receive Remind messages from UVA via email. Ask your Learning Coach Support team for instructions to unblock your phone number after your UVA subscription has been established.

Although Blynx is a Chatbot, the company that manages Blynx for us -- AllHere -- will also respond to incoming questions from you about UVA. For example, if you do not have the phone number to report a tech issue or if you need to report an absence, Blynx will tell you whom to contact. If Blynx does not have the answer, your incoming message will be passed on to a contact person at UVA.
Blynx is available 24/7 during the school year. So, you can text a question any time and will probably receive a response immediately. Otherwise, someone at UVA will get back with you the next school day.
