WATER 101: SINK OR SWIM – Learning How to Be Resilient

This two-part presentation and discussion series focuses on resilience, offering factual insights and sustainable solutions for navigating turbulent times in Pinellas County, Florida—a region uniquely surrounded by water. Participants will explore how to protect themselves and the environment in the face of local water challenges.

Part One: Understanding & Working with Our Water System

When: February 15th, 11:45 PM

Where: The Sanctuary

Barbara Noordsiij and Aimee Jackson from the UUSP Green Team will deliver a scientific overview of our region’s environmental water system. They will examine how water functions in Pinellas County and identify which elements of water present the greatest challenges for local residents. The session will conclude with practical guidance on the most effective individual actions people can take to safeguard their homes and the surrounding environment.

Part Two: Addressing Water Resource Threats and Solutions

When: February 22nd, 11:45 PM

Where: The Sanctuary

Pat Fling, a UUSP member and Co-Chair of the Political Committee of the Suncoast Sierra Club, will facilitate an interactive workshop. This session is designed to deepen understanding of the threats facing our water resources and explore solutions at the national, state, and local levels. Attendees will discuss issues related to water quality, supply, and policy, and will identify concrete actions individuals and communities can take to make a positive impact.

The workshop will also address the plight of the critically endangered Rice’s Whale in the Gulf of Mexico, sharing strategies to help prevent its extinction.
