Responsibility for Professional Competence:
Age appropriate materials in your lessons
Model Code of Ethics for Educators states, "The professional educator demonstrates responsible use of data, materials, research and assessments" The professional educator takes time and effort to ensure that they are exercising good judgement in selecting language, subject matter and materials that are developmentally appropriate. Do not make assumptions about an individual based on the racial, ethnic, or cultural groups to which they appear to belong.
While the teacher in this case study may have felt they were applying their subject in a meaningful example, if they had taken the time to stop, think, and reflect, they would should have realized that the lyrics of the song were not age appropriate for their students. Many times teachers are looking for ways to engage their students in meaningful ways and the use of current popular songs can be that hook. If faced with a similar situation, take the time to find songs or versions of the song that are appropriate for all ages. Also, recognizing that this may be a controversial task, be transparent with the students' parent/guardians, give them the opportunity to way in.
