How much is the stipend?
Teachers selected to participate in this 3-week residential institute will receive the NEH-stipulated stipend of $2,850 to cover their expenses during the institute including but not limited to travel, lodging, dining, and materials. Applicants should note that supplements will not be given in cases where the stipend is insufficient to cover all expenses.
Is it a taxable stipend?
Yes.
When will I receive my stipend?
Participants can expect to receive two stipend payments. Payments will be via direct deposit.
The first stipend payment of $950 will be paid close to the conclusion of the first week of the summer institute (~July 8th).
The second stipend payment, minus the university housing payment, will be paid shortly after the conclusion of the summer institute (~July 25th). If you do not stay in university housing it will be $1,900. The exact university housing payment will be communicated to you; however, you can calculate it by multiplying the number of nights by the nightly rate of $38. If you stay from July 3rd through July 22nd, the total will be $722 (19 nights x $38/night). Thus, for this example the final stipend payment would be $1,900 - $722 = $1,178.
What must we accomplish responsibly to receive the full $2,850 stipend?
Summer Institute participants are required to:
Attend all meetings.
Engage fully as professionals and colleagues in the work of the Institute and programming.
Complete and submit all Summer Institute Assignments.
What happens if I have to leave the institute early?
Project applicants who accept an offer to participate are expected to remain during the entire period of the program; however, we understand that extenuated circumstances may require an individual to leaver early. Therefore, if a participant is obliged through special circumstances to depart before the end of the program, they will only receive a pro rated share of the stipend based on a daily rate of $190/day. The daily rate is determined by dividing the total stipend amount (i.e. $2,850) by the total number of working days (i.e. 15).
If a participant receives a stipend share that exceeds their pro rated share, they will be expected return the difference.
