Traveling to Knoxville

Participants can choose to drive or fly to Knoxville, Tennessee.

Knoxville is served by two major interstates (I-40 & I-75) with a third interstate just east of the city (I-81).

Knoxville is served by McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS), which is approximately 12 miles south of the University of Tennessee campus. There are several car rental companies in and around the airport and ride sharing companies such as Lyft or Uber are readily available.

Where to Park & Checking-In

IF YOU ARE DRIVING YOURSELF & NEED TO PARK

The address you want to put into your GPS to get to Volunteer Hall is 1525 Clinch Ave. Knoxville, TN 37996. This will take you to the proper parking garage entrance. (see pictures to the left).

The visitor parking entrance is from White Avenue, and you'll be asked to pay a non-refundable fee to park.

Once in the non-commuter parking garage, which has a 6' 6" clearance, you will want to locate the main elevators or staircases. They will be clearly marked. The 3rd floor is marked as P3 Elevator with a red paint wrap, such as the photo on the left. If you park on the 4th floor it is marked P4 with purple paint.

Once in the elevator, go down to P2 and exit right out of the elevators and follow the signs to the front desk. The front desk will have someone there 24/7. You'll tell them your name and they will give you your key card.

Over night parking will cost $30 for the entire institute (commuter and non-commuter). We'll have to pick-up the permits on Tuesday, July 5th due to the holiday. I will have the paperwork ready for you on Sunday so your visit on Tuesday can be quick.

IF YOU ARE BEING DROPPED OFF

Other FAQs

Will there be internet?

Yes. The University of Tennessee offers a wifi network for guests called "UT Open". It is an unsecured network and requires no special configuration. Secure wifi may be available for summer institute participants but we'll know for sure as we get closer to the event.

For those staying at Volunteer Hall, there are wired internet options as well. Each room comes with 1-2 ports. You must bring your own ethernet cables.

Before using UT's internet networks, all devices must be registered and have up to date anti-virus software installed. Note: If you plan on using both wireless and the network port in the Residence Hall room, you will need to register your computer twice, once for each separate connection.

Can we access the library or any recreational spaces?

Yes. The University of Tennessee's Hodges Library is a public library. You will not be able to check anything out unfortunately.

As for recreational spaces:

What will the lodging look like during our field trips to Nashville and Memphis?

We are only staying in Memphis with stops in Nashville on our way to and from Memphis.

We will book hotels in Memphis for everyone. This will be a 2 night stay.

Participants will have their own rooms.
