February 2020: we ran Austin half marathon and full marathon!

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
I hope you are ready for Fall semester! I invite you to train this Fall semester for running or walking a half-marathon (13.1mi) or full marathon (26.2mi) in February 2020.
A number of us from PGE Department (and beyond) will start training with the organization called Austin Fit and we call ourselves “Team Energy”. You can, of course, simply train on your own instead of Austin Fit and still be part of the team. For those of you who remember, we did this from 2011 to 2017 and it is time for a restart.
If you are curious but not really decided – give running or walking a try! The worst that can happen is that you might learn that running really not your cup of tea, but nevertheless complete your first contiguous 6-mile run in the process. And that’s a success right there. The training will also provide that much-needed academic stress relief this Fall.
More details are found below. Email me (masha@utexas.edu) or drop by my office 4.186A on Friday, 8/23, 4-5pm or Friday, 8/30, 4-5pm if interested in joining Team Energy or getting more information. You can also simply show up at TxDOT Parking Lot (150 E. Riverside Dr, Austin, TX 78704) on Sat, 8/24 at 7am or Sat 8/31 at 7am.
DETAILS
We train with Austin Fit (their Facebook page). Group runs on Saturday mornings are at 7am (have I lost you at 7am?), and start from 2mi runs in late August, increasing steadily to 12mi (or 22mi for marathon runners) in January. You will run or walk with a group that is of your pace, and has an experienced volunteer coach. During the week, you run on your own approximately 3 X 30min. Even if you never ran before, this is enough to prepare you to run or walk 13.1mi (or 26.2mi if interested in marathon).
The initial meetings are on Saturday Aug 24 an at 7am, but don’t worry, you can sign up any Saturday for a month thereafter. Peer pressure works magic for getting up on Saturday mornings. The experienced runners around you will provide you with enough information so you end up in a better shape, well hydrated and not hurt. However, you are welcome to train on your own, and still be on our team and get a nice Team Energy shirt for the race.
Cost: Registration: Austin Fit fee membership that covers 26 weeks of training is $135 for a new member, $105 for returning member and we have secured a $20 discount. Please contact me for details on how to register with discount.
Races: Signing up for any half marathon race costs ~$100 and more for a marathon, unfortunately racing itself is not very cheap. We will try to fundraise to pay for everyone’s race registration this Fall.
