Now entering Year 3, TRAILS is a five-year professional learning program supported by the U.S. Department of Education through an American History and Civics National Activities Grant. Since 2024, TRAILS has created meaningful opportunities for educators to deepen their knowledge, strengthen their practice, and experience history beyond the classroom.

TRAILS combines high-quality professional learning, nationally recognized scholars and educators, collaborative learning, book studies, and unforgettable place-based experiences throughout Kentucky and across the United States. Our learning connects history and civics content with practical, evidence-based strategies in inquiry, literacy, engagement, and effective classroom practice.

Best of all, TRAILS is designed with educators in mind. Our flexible Freedom to Choose model allows participants to select the opportunities that best fit their professional goals, interests, and schedules while earning up to $3,000 each project year for eligible participation.

TRAILS welcomes educational professionals across participating districts, including K–12 teachers, special education teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators.
