Curriculum
The Independent Curriculum (Merdeka Belajar Curriculum) is implemented during our stay in Indonesia. It is a shift from the old curriculum (The Emergency Curriculum) to a new one, therefore, we arrived at the school where they are still adjusting their practices to the new curriculum. The Independent Curriculum is a student-centered approach that lets schools and teachers adapt lessons to fit students' needs and local situations. It promotes the exploration of the students' creativity, interests, and passion. It also helps students catch up on the learning lost during the pandemic by focusing on key subjects and building important skills like thinking creatively, working together, and utilizing fun problem-solving exercises. Teachers should thus support this learning environment by giving students the direction, encouragement, and tools they need to take control of their education.Â
In terms of content, I was assigned the following topics: Present Perfect Tense and Procedure Text. Due to the Independent Curriculum, I was able to make innovative ideas and create my own throughout my teaching practice. I made use of traditional visual aids, Canva presentations, images, videos, and creative assessments, such as origami paper for my procedural text final demo, and energetic question-and-answer portions to see if the students understood the lessons being taught.
