Week 1
Saturday
For Week 1, we were shown some of the local shopping districts both for buying the traditional clothing of Batik, eating the local cuisines, and also having souvenir ideas for people back home. We learned that Batiks would usually have a lot of dyes left from their original manufacturing, so in order to wash them properly, we had to first hand-wash them. Personally, because I am not the best with washing clothes, thankfully, the local laundry mat in the area knew hot to clean a batik, so with some caution to let them know that it was brand new, I was finally a proud owner of such an amazing culture in the form of their traditional clothing!
We went to the Kasunanan Palace as well where we were told that it was also the residence of the royal family. The most fun fact I learned was that the Prince was apparently there when we were there as well! We saw amazing history as well, where my favorite was the evolution of the carriages used for the royal family.
Sunday
We didn't have a specific plan to go anywhere, but we were told that every Sunday, Surakarta has an event where the whole street is cleared from vehicles so people can see vendors, do some walking exercises, and even meet with animals! Although it was only open from 6 AM to 9 AM, it was a lovely experience. We also went to the Sriwedari Park to feed deer! It was a bit scary because I was not sure how to feed them properly, but it was something I could never forget.
We were able to go to the following places:
Pasar Gede
Pasar Klewer
Kasunanan Palace
Car Free Day Event
Sriwedari Park
The videos above show what we did during the Car Free Day that includes interacting with owls, sugar gliders, and waiting for their mini train. The pictures below show everything else we did for this cultural week!
WEEK 2
For Week 2, we were able to meet with the other schools that will be joining us in our exchange, which were from the following:Â Udon Thani Rajabhat University (UDRU) and Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST).
Saturday
It was a great adventure wherein we had to leave at 7 AM to get to the train station in Yogyakarta! We had a joke about fighting for a seat on the train. A delegate from NEUST & now a close friend named Echo, did not realize we were going on a trip and wore his formal black shoes the entire time, wherein we had to walk for a solid 8-10 hours.
The trains were so much more different from what we have here in the Philippines because a lot of infrastructure from Indonesia's former colonization by the Dutch was preserved. Taman Sari was such a beautiful place of not only great scenery, beautiful history about princesses, and even showcases what the living situations were when you were part of royalty! The Museum Senobudoyo showed me the rich history of the royal family traditions, weapons used from the past, wooden door carvings, statues, and their traditional puppetry. It was such a beautiful experience as the lights inside of the museum started with dark rooms, which symbolize the start of the country's origins and all the way to their most modern cultural changes that was shown little by little when the lights of the rooms began to become brighter with even the light from the outside shining inward. The innovations in technology, where I played some rhythm games and virtual archery, to the history of their masks were amazing.
Malioboro was one of the last places we went to as the sun was setting. It was a beautiful place with streets that showed the beauty of their roads, nature, and a great mixture of old and new cultures being combined. The long trip to get to Yogyakarta was worth every moment.
Sunday
We went to the Pura Mangkunegaran to further understand the beauty and rich history of the Javanese people. We saw beautiful golden lions at the entrance with a ceiling that had a symbol of color that gave good karma to those who were able to hug one of the pillars entirely, with their fingers touching. I was only able to barely make it because one of the UDRU delegates (Krit) helped push my arms together. This entire building was made for the royal family, and the thought of being in this presence was extravagant.Â
Pusat Gosir Solo was a place we went to for the other delegates to go shopping for their own batiks. Although we didn't have to buy any more as we already bought our own from the first week, I wanted to buy one more with the other delegates. It just so happened that 4-5 of us bought the EXACT SAME batik design.
We were able to go to the following:
Taman Sari
Malioboro
Museum Senobudoyo
Pura Mangkunegaran
Pusat Grosir Solo
WEEK 3
Our Final Cultural Week in Indonesia. Although it was short, it was such a wonderful experience to have been a part of.
Saturday
We went to Batik Class as our entire event for the day! Starting at 3 PM, all of us from UST, UDRU, and NEUST sat down to learn to make our own Batik that we can own ourselves (a design at least)! The first part was the trickiest because although we were given a patterned design from our batik teacher, some of us had difficulty using the hot wax correctly onto the fabric. Even when I had some experience with drawing, I was not prepared for how much or how little the wax was going to pour down. After finally giving the wax outline, we proceeded to paint our batik, and because I was not great at coloring, I was somewhat decent at drawing, I took inspiration from my fellow delegates who knew better than I did with coloring. I believe I did a good job! As we were just finishing up our coloring, we were surprised by rainfall. Thankfully, we were all safe; it was a very memorable experience for sure.
Sunday
For this day, because it is our last cultural day (at least for UST), we had a great finale! We went to Candi Plaosan, where we were able to see the beautiful structures and history of what links the social and religious dynamics of central Java.
Afterwards, we went to Umbul Kapilaler, a very popular water park! From getting our feet nibbled on by fish to swimming to the deeper waters of the park, this was the best end of the cultural trip I could wish for. All of us are just having fun and not having a care in the world. We made jokes, made amazing memories, and even learned how to push water out of our hands! A lot of us took pictures with the trees and even tried to do an underwater video, but sadly, it failed. Overall, these cultural trips made me appreciate the culture and history of Indonesia, Java, and Surakarta as a whole even more than what I had before.
We went to the following:
Batik Class
Candi Plaosan
Umbul Kapilaler
Welcome Party at UNS
We were welcomed by the FKIP-UNS through a welcoming ceremony, with a tour of the university and an introduction to the religious buildings that UNS has for all students of diverse beliefs. I am forever thankful to UNS for giving me genuinely an opportunity of a lifetime. The video below was my reaction to UNS showing our faces announcing of our arrival!
Deployment Day at SMP 1 Negeri Surakarta
The school I was deployed to was Sekolah Menengah Pertama 1 Negeri Surakarta, also known as SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta is a State Junior High School located in Jalan M.T. Haryono 4, Surakarta City, Indonesia. It has a great longstanding history of academic excellence, presidential alumni, and a history of being the first ever junior high school in Surakarta makes it popular in so many ways.
Fun Fact: Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) translates to English as "School Middle First" which is Middle School First Step which makes it the Junior High School.
Observations at SMP 1 Negeri Surakarta
Before we were given the opportunity to teach the students of SMP 1, we were given the opportunity to learn from our Supervising Teacher's class. It gave us an idea on how to teach the class especially on the emphasis of repetition with a slow and steady approach.
Komunitas Kerohanian Siswa Katolik (Catholic Student Spiritual Community): Light Spensa
As part of the curriculum, there have been a diversity of religions in the student body. They were given time, day, and a room for Catholic prayer. Although it was all said in Bahasa Indonesia, it was a great showcase of acceptance and a wonderful experience! At the end of our SEA Teacher exchange, we (me and Guia) were given a rosary, which I currently use to this day! I huge thanks to them for a thoughtful gift!
Practicum (Week 1)
After observing our Supervising Teachers and being able to get great feedback from my mentor Bu Yayuk (Ma'am Yayuk), I was ready to handle the section of 9E, 9F, 9G, and 9H! It was a bit difficult, but it was fun! I was being observed by Bu Yayuk to further improve my teaching in the next few weeks.
Practicum (Week 2)
After the first week, I was able to adapt a bit to the new environment. Handling four sections, new time to start & finish a lesson, and different classroom management it opened my eyes to new perspectives which will help with the final demo and for my future career.
Final Demo (Procedure Text)
My final demo was a success! Throughout understanding the teaching approaches of the teachers from Indonesia, the techniques I needed to use to get the students involved with learning, and the creative ways to implement the lesson of procedure in both a slow and steady process, I was able to successfully finish it! I was able to show the class on how to make an origami crane! They all loved it as it was a flappable version of the crane where they can make it "fly"!Â
SMP 1 Negeri Surakarta Faculty Members
Throughout our stay at SMP 1 Surakarta, the teachers welcomed us with open arms. We were shared their food and even gave us a small tour of the facilities in the school to meet all of them. I am honored that I was able to learn from them and grateful for their kindness.
Delicious Food
During our duration, we were invited to several dinners and were given such great food recommendations! I knew that Indonesia had amazing food, but after tasting the flavors of my now favorite food of Fried Tempeh, everything in life made sense now. If you can't handle spice, I wish you luck!
Recommendations:
Fried Tempeh
Ayam Geprek (Smashed Fried Chicken)
Fried Bakwan (Vegetable Fritters)
Anything with Sambal (spicy)
Meeting and being Friends with The Other School Delegates! (UDRU, NEUST, and SLU)
I was able to become great friends with the other delegates even though we only had a short amount of time left. From the shenanigans of partying, birthdays, joking around, and being camera men for each other, I will forever remember all of them as great people. I will never forget their names and their personalities. They made an already great experience a lot better!
Bulan Bahasa: English Games
Bulan Bahasa was an event to get students to learn more of the English language through challenging games. "Bulan Bahasa" is also translated as Language Month! There were two activities done: vocabulary relay and guess the vocabulary word. We were lucky enough to participate as timekeepers and as judges for checking the English words written if they were spelled correctly or not.Â
Outreach Program at Panti Asuhan Anak Seribu Pulau (Christian Orphanage)
The English Student Association of FKIP UNS invited us to participate in their outreach program, teaching children Basic English. Being able to interact and bond with them was a fulfilling experience. They had exercises like how to color while also teaching the way to say the word in both Bahasa Indonesia and English. They also played games. I was able to form some bonds with others through playing games on my phone with them and just laughing throughout.
Lokananta Museum, Solo
The museum is the oldest music studio in Indonesia, and is an interesting place for music enthusiasts. It had a wonderful and interactive showcase of the history of music throughout Indonesia. It showcased the albums that shaped Indonesia's music and even the process of making a song! We were accompanied by the delegates from the Saint Louis University (SLU) and I was inspired by one of them (Giulian) to take a lot of aesthetically good looking photos. We also explored the other stores surrounding the museum.
Bahasa Indonesia Language Class
We had the opportunity to learn Bahasa Indonesia from UNS students who are majoring in the language. We had a total of five classes with them, teaching us the basics of the Bahasa Indonesian language. We were able to learn the following topics: Basic greetings, how to buy food, and at the end we were able to present a full sentence!
One of them (Adele) shared a great spicy snack with us which I instantly loved!
Two wafer snacks that was made into a form of a heart!
The shirt given by the student with a letter on the why it is culturally amazing. I wear it with pride!
A wonderful bag given by me from the teachers of SMP 1 Surakarta!
Gifts from Students and Teachers!
Throughout my time in Indonesia, I believe I did a great job being as friendly as I can and showcase some of my personality. However, I was not ready to be given an actual gift from two students and I will forever be grateful. I was ready to only just get a "thank you for being with us", but I will never forget all of their kindness! Same goes for the teachers in SMP 1 Surakarta who unexpectedly gave me a bag!
Traditional Indonesian Dance and Filipino Singing
Students of SMP 1 Surakarta would usually have a talent show once every week on Friday they had rotating event plan as part of the Independent Curriculum that appreciates Indonesia's five principles (P Lima). We were given the opportunity to have a cultural talent exchange of us dancing on the Friday event! We wore traditional attire for the dance, practiced with the student club members on how to dance it well, and showed everything we learned to the whole school. Afterwards, we sang the "Bahay Kubo" song, which is a Filipino nursery song!
Co-Delegates, UNS Buddies and Our Dorm Mother
Our entire journey throughout this SEA Teacher Program would not be anyway possible without our dorm mother, Bu Dewi (Ma'am Dewi) and the countless amount of help from UNS buddies, especially from the captain of the ship, Kamilla! Lastly, I cannot forget to thank my co-delegates, Guia and Raemonn for being there through all of it. I would not change a thing. Their kindness, patience, and great attitude will forever be something I will be thankful for as people who I can safe to say are my friends and I wish to keep in touch more often in the future! Thank you so much for everything!
Farewell Party
On our final night in Surakarta City, we had one last farewell dinner followed by a trip to the night market. It was simple, but very emotional. We did so much together as what I believe is a new family. We had our laughs, celebrated birthdays, cooked food for each other, and experienced the beauty that Indonesia, UNS, SMP 1, and UST gave us. It was an emotional time, but one I will never forget. Thank you all for the wonderful gifts and memories! This is not a goodbye, but a see you later.
