The University of Santo Tomas Pax Romana is the oldest religious organization in UST that started in 1940s and upholds the University’s Christian ideals through its proactive confrontation of the twin evils of materialism and secularism. The UST Pax Romana is a known University Wide Student Religious Organization that is composed of four sections namely Catechetical Section, Christian Renewal Section, Cultural Section, and Social Action Section. It is a religious, educational, cultural, socio-civic, non-profit organization, and peace advocate. As the premier religious student arm, the organization pioneers in organizing various activities and events for the total formation of Catholic Christian individuals.
Pax Romana does not just offer activities that cater to students’ prayer life. It goes beyond by offering relevant and Christ-centered community service programs that are rooted in our Catholic faith and values as well as activities that promote the intellectual formation of the students through the discussions and applications of the Catholic faith towards modern-day societal issues that have become divisive rather than unitive, which fulfils the University’s mission of producing intellectual, compassionate, and committed individuals. It moves towards promoting Christian faith through the light of Christ and peace through love of Mary in helping others within the University. The name Pax Romana originated from its motto “Pax Christi in Regno Christi” which translates to “The Peace of Christ in The Reign/Kingdom of Christ”. Pax Romana translates to “Roman Peace” which is the greatest time of peace in the history of the church.
The University of Santo Tomas Pax Romana – Education Unit, in pursuit of truth, guided by reason and illumined by faith, inspired by the living experience of Christ, and guided by the preferential option for the poor, dedicates herself to fostering a community which develops a pedagogy of critical reflection and holistic transformation and solidarity for realizing a world of justice and peace and committed to the integral formation of Catholic students as a prerequisite of him/her as a true genuine lay apostle, morally upright, competent, and compassionate professionals who have passion for truth, whose selfless service to God and neighbor is manifested in their responsiveness to national and global concerns, and committed to the service of the Church, nation, and the global community.
The University of Santo Tomas Pax Romana – Education Unit envisions itself to be a dynamic partner of the university in its pursuit of social transformation and integral development of the Thomasian community and its partner communities. It dedicates itself to the advancement and transmission of the faith which illumines the community in committing themselves to social responsibility and transformation. It is fundamental for the organization to build on the three virtues of University as its foundation
RELIGIOUS – Pax Romana is an organization that focuses on promulgating the PEACE of CHRIST in the society through its activities. As discussed in the Pax Romana Constitution Article II Function 1-3, it shall serve as the religion student arm of the University of Santo Tomas, organizing activities for the Christian formation of the students and shall present possible solutions to the obstacles that challenge the student’s faith of the current time.
EDUCATIONAL – Pax Romana teaches its members life lessons and values which they will carry out as they went on to their professional life. It also teaches its members the lessons that God has bestowed upon us. Pax Romana also cater to the intellectual formation of individual with regards to the faith and the vast issues that plague society, which hones the persons understanding of these said problems and become catalyst of change and light in the shadows of misinformation.
CULTURAL – Pax Romana strives to promote the God-given talents of all its members and encourages them to share it to others and to be proud of it.
SOCIO-CIVIC – Pax Romana is an organization the initiates activities that will be for the good of the community as a whole and for each and every people living within the community.
NON-PROFIT – Pax Romana does its activities aiming to help others and to spread peace to the community. Blind from the intention of earning profits to keep for itself but to use all money for the realization of its mission, vision and objective. The organization is composed of students united by Catholic faith and the passion for serving God and His people. Pax Romana aims towards the formation of Catholic University students and prepares them to be future Catholic professionals. This formation includes moral, social, apostolic, religious, and intellectual. Today, the UST Pax Romana under the International Movement of Catholic Students Pax Romana is responding to the new age problems that challenge the Catholic faith in defense of the integrity of the human person.
The logo of the University of Santo Tomas Pax Romana is a shield surrounded by green laurel leaves, on which superimposed is the symbol Chi Rho surrounded by three (3) roses, written around it is Pax Christi in Regno Christi, and above it are the initials of the University and a dove. The dove at the top symbolizes that the organization guided by the Holy Spirit stands for its advocacy of peace and the shield represents the organization’s defense against the twin evils of materialism and secularism. It symbolizes the commitment of the organization as a community to defend and uphold the Catholic faith. The green laurel leaves are a sign of everlasting commitment in protecting the Catholic faith, wisdom, and unrelenting passion to serve God. The color yellow represents the virtues of courage and honor. The Chi Rho is considered as the oldest and earliest known monogram for Christ or Christogram used by Christians. It is superimposed at the middle to symbolize Jesus Christ as the center of the organization. It is then surrounded by three (3) roses that represent the Blessed Virgin Mary who is often called the Mystical Rose of Heaven. The roses are three (3) as it symbolizes the three (3) virtues of Mary which are humility, simplicity, and modesty. The thorns symbolize the hardships, pains, and sufferings of the people for the love of God. It is placed beneath the Chi Rho to symbolize the importance of the Blessed Mother as the Mother of God and the Mother of all and recognizes her as a vital source of inspiration and guidance for the organization. Pax Christi in Regno Christi or The Peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ, the organization’s official motto, exemplifies the organization’s undying belief in the Kingship of Christ and where the name of the organization was derived. As a mark of the University, its initials are placed at the top of the logo.
This section looks after the imparting of religious knowledge to others. It also ensures the unselfish dedication of the members to the apostolic endeavors of Catechetical work outside the University whose activities shall be coordinated by the Director of the Center for Campus Ministry.
This section promotes the religious well-being of Pax Romana members and direct their activities aimed at helping the University achieve its religious ideals by promoting full, conscious and active participation in the liturgical celebrations.
This section promotes the cultural well-being of Pax Romana members and direct their activities aimed at helping the University students enrich their Christian and Filipino cultural ideals.
This section establishes and consolidates a Christian student community by promoting corporal works of mercy, making the members aware of their part in the solution of the different problems of the society by educating and training them in the theory and practice of the Christian social order through activities engaged in this field of work.
The whole College of Education community prayed the Holy Rosary in commemoration of the glorious Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. The Blessed Virgin Mary has a very special place in the life of Pax Romana - Education Unit.
The College of Education community paid tribute to its dearest patron, Saint Joseph Calasanz, by inviting a brother from the Piarist Order (the congregation founded by Saint Joseph) to celebrate with us through a paraliturgy and a simple sharing about the life of Saint Joseph.
Held as a tribute to the Blessed Virgin Mary in celebration of her joyous nativity, the Pax Romana - Education Unit sang to her and to God as a form thanksgiving for the gift of her existence. A day-long besamanto for the image of the Child Mary was also held and prayer intentions were collected.
To culminate the month of the Holy Rosary, the Pax Romana - Education Unit held the grandest possible way of praying the Holy Rosary to emphasize its special place in the life of the Dominican Order—the root of our University and of the College of Education.
