São Carlos is a municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo, located in the Central-East region and about 231 kilometres from the state capital. According to IBGE estimates as of 1 July 2021, the city had 256,915 inhabitants over 1,136.9 km². The 14th most populous city in the state’s interior, São Carlos has earned the nickname “Capital of Science and Technology.” Around 1% of its population holds a PhD (ten times the national average), reflecting the city’s strong academic character. With several universities across the region, São Carlos has a vibrant student presence that adds a youthful, energetic rhythm to everyday life.
