In AY25 - Dr. Yates is currently on sabbatical leave at the US Naval Research Laboratory.
In their research experience in the Yates Lab, midshipmen learn firsthand how to design, propose, and implement an exclusive research project. They take full ownership of their project and diligently implement their experimental design. Their time spent in the laboratory enables training in learning advanced biophysical chemistry techniques (i.e. lipid techniques, microscopy, biosensor formation, protein aggregation, surface phenomena, spectroscopy), and using state of the art instrumentation (i.e. atomic force microscopy, Langmuir trough).
Midshipmen researchers in the Yates lab have presented their research at numerous national meetings (American Chemical Society, Biophysical Society, Adhesion Society, etc.). Midshipmen co-authors are prevalent in Yates lab research publications due to their exceptional work and analysis in the laboratory.
"I am fortunate to have an active research program here at the US Naval Academy. I feel a sense of pride knowing the students I have trained and worked with are able to make an impact on the field of biophysical chemistry in peer-reviewed journal publications. Without the midshipmen involvement and productivity, my research laboratory would not be where it is today. I am grateful to the midshipmen that I have advised and worked with." - Dr. Yates
