The physical self is the visible and tangible aspect of a person that can directly be observed or scrutinized. It is seen as a container and an intricate machine that is used to face people and their surroundings. The following are different perspectives on the physical self, which are explained by various psychologists and Eastern traditions
WILLIAM JAMES looked at the physical self as the source of human sensation which is essential for producing and maintaining one's personality. He stressed the importance of training the body to achieve excellent physical health because it is where one's consciousness and soul dwell.
SIGMUND FREUD looked at the physical self as the center of human experience. He also conceptualized the body ego as the source for the development of all egos.
WILHELM REICH considered the mind and the body as one. He stressed that all psychological experiences and processes are part of the physical dynamics of a person. He asserted that it plays a critical role in human engagements through the storage and transmission of bioenergy needed for one's existence and experience.
ERIK ERIKSON equated and anchored human experience with the body. Bodily organs play particular roles in a person's early development. Later in life, the development of intellectual competence becomes part of the physical self in determining how an individual will choose challenging roles in society.
B. F. SKINNER, as a behaviorist, particularly stressed on the role of the body in studying human behavior, particularly overt behavior. He also considers the human body as a closed yet filled container.
THE PHYSICAL SELF: THE SELF AS IMPACTED BY THE BODY
The human brain is the body's control center, receiving and sending signals to other organs through the nervous system and through secreted hormones. It is responsible for our thoughts, feelings, memory storage and general perception of the world
THE IMPACT OF CULTURE ON BODY IMAGE AND SELF-ESTEEM
BODY IMAGE refers to the way one physically looks at themselves and the way they feel about their body. There are different factors that affect an individual's self-image. One of the most influential factors is culture, which can either be positively or negatively taken. One must use their awareness in order to have a positive body image.
SELF-ESTEEM, on the other hand, refers to how one values and respects themselves. It involves the entirety of a person, not just the physical aspect. Different cultures on dieting and body image may sometimes lead one to enhance their form excessively or biologically inappropriately for the sake of attractiveness and beauty
