The creation of tepo mats by Sama Dilaut women is a meticulous process that involves consideration of various factors in their designs. The complex geometric patterns used in the mats showcase their precise sense of design, proportion, symmetry, and sensitivity to color combinations (Romero, 2020). The intricate patterns are deeply rooted in their environment, it’s no wonder that the rippling designs remind one of the waves, or of sunlight reflecting on water. Tawi-tawi representative Ruby Sahali stated that the designs and patterns of the tepo mats made by Sama Dilaut women came from the moon, the sea, the color of the sun, the leaves, from the mountains they see; their design came from their own environment (Ranada, 2015). Every mat they weave is like a piece of their culture, showing their skill and their love for where they come from.
