Follow these guidelines to prepare for competition at track meets. Being the best means being prepared.
2. For home meets be at the track one hour before the start of the meet. You must stay until our home meet is finished!
3. Checklist of items for meets: travel bag , spikes, complete uniform, running shoes, warm-ups, implements/vaulting poles
4. Take care of your equipment. Keep all items placed in the stands where the team is setting or have a teammate hold your equipment until you finish your event. Remember, you are responsible for all equipment issued to you.
5. Bring food that is non-greasy and provides you with energy. (i.e. fruits, nuts vegetables, cold sandwiches). No hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries or nachos. Have plenty of water/Gatorade (NO SODA).
6. Know when your event is and report in plenty of time. Know your heat or lane assignments.
7. Allow for adequate warm-up before your event (30-45 minutes/two events prior). Prepare to compete mentally as well as physically. Avoid getting cold while waiting for an event.
8. If you leave a field event to run a race, always inform the official that you will return as soon as possible.
9. Always look before crossing the track or runway so as not to interfere. Be alert around shot, disc, and javelin areas.
10. After your race, stay in your lane and walk back to the finish line. Wait for someone to get your name and school. If possible get your finish and time. Never taunt, use foul language, or throw the baton.
11. Be part of the team. Do not go to the bus during events that your teammates are competing in. Cheer them on. Provide encouragement, but never run along beside them.
12. Act as if you are used to winning. Follow good sportsmanship and treat other competitors and meet officials accordingly. IT IS OK TO HATE TO GET BEAT, BUT NOT OK TO SHOW IT.
