We begin instrumental music education at SCMS in 5th Grade through beginning band. At the beginning of the school year, all 5th graders will have the opportunity to try out the beginning band instruments (under the close eye of Mrs. Janssen and a few helpers in the form of retired band directors) and choose what they would like to learn. 5th Graders can choose to begin band on flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone (limited instrument availability), or bells (bells are selected by audition only - we limit to 4 students maximum in that section). We start with very basic instrument choices and as students get older, they will have the opportunity to try out for more advanced instruments such as the bass clarinet, saxophone, French horn, and tuba.

Mrs. Janssen will send home information with many more details about beginning band with your students at the end of 4th grade and again at the beginning of 5th grade.
