Real World Relevance

CONGRATULATIONS on your election. You have sworn an oath to protect and serve the Constitution of the United States of America and the people of your congressional district.

Thomas Jefferson said that "An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people."

It is your civic duty to make sure the constituents of your district are informed on issues that are important to them.

As a public servant you will be responsible for writing a monthly newsletter to the people in your district.

In Class Application

It is your responsibility as a citizen of HHS to make sure that you and your classmates are informed on current issues.

Every Friday in class you will present on the current issues relevant to your district.

Summary should include: Who, What, When, Where, and Why this is important/relevant to the people of your district /the class.

The topics are included below.

Monthly Newsletter Topics

Friday 1: Economy: ex- employment, stock market, GDP, taxes, trade

Friday 2: Health and Human Services: ex- health care, civil rights, substance abuse, community living

Friday 3: Safety/Foreign Policy: ex- state/local EMS, treaties, terrorism, foreign affairs

Friday 4: Relevant Events of your Choice: ex- Current Events, Gun Control, Voting Rights, Abortion, Immigration, Free Speech, etc.

Grading - 15 points per week

4pts - Summary of the issue: Who, What, When, Where, Why important

4pts - Explanation of why this is important to your constituents. How will it affect them. What solutions do YOU support on this issue? Should match your ideology.

3pts - Images, Links, Tweets, Video about the topic in the newsletter

4pts - Weekly oral summary of the current issue and why it is important to your constituents given on Friday.

Format

Use any format you want.

Google Sites: Make a cover page with information about you and your district. Include some images. Add a page for each Month. On those monthly pages make Sections for Economy, Health, Safety, Other. Update the site each week as you add information about Current Issues in the News. Great for adding images, links, and video.

Google Slides: Similar to Google Sites. Could have a cover slide about you and your district. Add slides for each week and the topics. Easy formatting for adding images, links, video, etc.

Google Doc: Create a new Doc for each Month. Should be divided into sections. One section should include information about you and your district. Docs not as easy to format and move text, images, video around.
