In order to perform to the best of your ability, you must fuel the system. It's just like fueling a car- it will perform the best with the cleaner fuel (regular unleaded vs premium unleaded). If you fill up your unleaded tank with diesel, it will breakdown. In a similar way, your body cannot handle calorie-dense, nutrient-depleted food without a drop in performance or breaking down altogether.
