Writing is a skill closely connected with reading, yet it comes with its own unique challenges. Many times, words are spelled differently than they are said. For example, the word Wednesday is spelled Wed-nes-day, but we say it "Wednsday". As a result, we often say words to ourselves differently when we are trying to spell it. I tell my students to think about the parts of the words as they are spelling it. If they are trying to write the word inventor, they might say in-vent-OR emphasizing the "or" sound instead of the "er" sound that we say. This helps them focus on those strange parts that might be confusing.
