The following testing will take place at school each year.
PreACT 8/9 (required of all Freshmen): First week of October (October 1, 2025)
PreACT (required of all Sophomores): First week of October (October 1, 2025)
ACT WorkKeys (offered to all Juniors): First week of October (October 1, 2025)) Mrs. Ackerman will ask students in August if they want to take this test.
ACT (offered to all Juniors): Last Tuesday of February (February 24, 2026). Mrs. Ackerman will reach out to students in November or December to sign up for the ACT.
The ACT is a test used by many colleges and scholarship organizations to determine acceptance or qualifications for scholarship opportunities. The test is written to cover material you should know by the end of your Junior year.
The state provides the opportunity for us to give the ACT here at SHS to juniors on a school day towards the end of February or first week of March for free. It is not required, but highly encouraged for most to take the test for free on that day. Some students choose to take the test more than one time to try to get better scores. You can do so at your expense (usually around $68, if you have a financial need I can help you get a fee waiver) at other locations (most go to DC3). Whether you take the test more than one time is a personal decision unique to each student and their family. There tends to be a lot of pressure put on the ACT. Please remember while it can help you get money for college it is not the only way to earn scholarships. Many colleges do often ask for the ACT score but it is not the only way to be accepted in to colleges. There are some specific programs that may have a requirement for a minimum ACT requirement so it is a good idea to research the college and specific programs you are interested in.
You usually need to register 5-6 weeks ahead of the test date. National test dates are on Saturday mornings. When considering your test dates carefully check calendars to make sure you do not have activities Friday night that will keep you out too late or anything on Saturday until after 1:30 p.m.
Please DO NOT wait until the last day to register. Their site goes down for maintenance at times and sometimes you might have trouble getting logged in. I can assist you with calling ACT for help if problems arise but I do not have any ability to solve registration/log in problems.
