Technical Education Programs

Oskaloosa High School students have the opportunity to attend technical education programs through area partner institutions, Washburn Institute of Technology and Highland Community College Technical Center. These programs allow students to gain hands-on experience, earn industry credentials and/or college credit, and explore career pathways while completing high school.

Program availability, schedules, eligibility requirements, transportation, application procedures, and associated costs vary by institution. High school students are offered discounted tuition. To qualify, students must have completed at least one-half of the credits required for high school graduation and have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.0. Students should work with Ms. Newman to explore available programs and determine how technical coursework will fit within their high school schedule and graduation plan.

Washburn Tech | Topeka

Washburn Tech offers a variety of hands-on technical programs that allow high school students to earn college credit and work toward industry-recognized credentials while completing high school. Oskaloosa students attend Washburn Tech as part of their school day, with district transportation provided.

Students interested in attending Washburn Tech the following school year should begin the application process during the fall semester. Oskaloosa students are strongly encouraged to submit their application online and turn in the Consent to Enroll/Recommendation Form (with parent/guardian signature) to Ms. Newman by December 15.

Highland Tech | Atchison

Highland Technical Center provides high school students with hands-on career and technical education in a variety of career fields. Students can earn college credit and develop industry-specific skills while completing their high school education. Oskaloosa students attend the Atchison campus as part of their school day, with district transportation provided.

Students interested in attending Highland Tech the following school year should begin the application process during the current school year. Highland Tech does not have a firm application deadline; however, Oskaloosa students are strongly encouraged to submit their applications by March 1 to allow plenty of time for program placement, scheduling, and transportation planning.

Highland Tech requires placement testing for technical program enrollment. Oskaloosa High School plans to administer the WorkKeys assessment during the fall semester for Juniors and sophomore students interested in attending Highland Tech the following school year. Students may retake the WorkKeys assessment as needed to meet placement requirements for their selected program. Students should visit with Ms. Newman for information about testing dates, scores, and program-specific placement requirements.

What type of student are you?
Select “DUAL ENROLLMENT: I am a high school student looking to take classes while still in high school.”
Do you plan on pursuing both a technical certificate and Early College/General Studies credits as a high school student taking classes at HCC?
Select “Yes.”
What type of career or academic path are you most interested in exploring at Highland?
Select “Skilled Trades and Technical Careers.”
