Earn College Credit While You're Still in High School

Oskaloosa High School students have several opportunities to earn college credit before graduation. Courses are available right here at Oskaloosa High School through our college partners, as well as online through a variety of colleges and universities. Highland Community College

Through Highland Community College’s Early College Program, Oskaloosa High School students can earn both high school and college credit through courses offered as part of their OHS schedule. Current offerings include College Algebra and College Trigonometry, taught by Mrs. Miller, as well as College Composition I, College Composition II, and College Public Speaking, taught by Mrs. Soper. For the 2026–2027 school year, Early College tuition is $65 per credit hour, or $195 for each three-credit-hour course.

Placement Requirements

Some Highland Community College Early College courses require students to meet specific placement requirements before enrolling. This includes College Algebra and College Composition I/II. Placement may be based on high school GPA, ACT scores, ASSET or ACCUPLACER scores, and/or prerequisite coursework. Use the guide below to review the placement options for commonly offered Early College courses.

Oskaloosa High School will submit students’ transcripts and ACT scores to Highland for placement verification. If additional placement testing is needed, Mrs. Newman will help students determine what testing is required and how to complete it. Placement testing for College Algebra is typically arranged through Oskaloosa High School during the spring semester. Students who need an English placement score may need to complete testing through Highland’s Atchison testing center; students should visit with Ms. Newman about available options.

Pitt State University

Through Pittsburg State University’s PSU Ready Dual Credit Program, Oskaloosa High School offers College Biology and College Anatomy & Physiology, taught at OHS by Ms. Newell. Both are year-long, 5-credit-hour college courses that allow students to earn high school and college credit simultaneously. For the 2026–2027 school year, PSU Ready tuition is $121 per credit hour, or $605 for each five-credit-hour course.

Highland Community College
HS Online

Through Highland Community College’s Early College HS Online Program, students who have completed their freshman year can earn college credit through fully online courses designed specifically for high school students. A variety of courses are offered each semester, allowing students to get a head start on college coursework while maintaining flexibility within their high school schedule. For Fall 2026, tuition is $65 per credit hour, with some courses requiring additional consumable fees.

Fort Hays Tech North Central

Fort Hays Tech | North Central offers online college courses for high school students, providing the flexibility to complete coursework without attending class on campus or at specific scheduled times. These courses are separate from concurrent courses taught at OHS and allow students to expand their college and career-focused course options. Most courses are $50 per credit hour, while select courses may be available at no tuition cost through CTE funding or may require additional course fees, books, or software.

Emporia State University
Jump Start

Emporia State University’s Jump Start Program gives high school students the opportunity to earn college credit through online ESU courses while still in high school. Course options include a variety of general education subjects, including English, math, science, social sciences, communications, and arts and humanities. Courses are taught online by Emporia State instructors and can help students begin completing college requirements before graduation. Jump Start courses are $100 per credit hour, with Jump Start students receiving a $79-per-credit-hour scholarship for up to 9 credit hours, reducing the student cost to $21 per credit hour.

Highland Excel in CTE

Through Highland Community College’s Excel in CTE Online Program, eligible Kansas high school juniors and seniors can take select Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses online while still in high school. Courses are available in areas such as Agriculture, Business, Early Childhood, and Health Sciences, providing students an opportunity to earn college credit while exploring career-focused coursework. Qualifying courses are tuition-free through Excel in CTE funding, although some courses may have book, consumable, or other associated fees.

Excel in CTE Eligibility: Students must be a junior or senior, have completed at least half of their high school graduation requirements, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and be accepted into the applicable program of study.

Use this guide to see how commonly available dual credit courses can fit into the seven general education areas and help you plan your college coursework. This is a planning resource, not a guarantee that a student will complete an associate degree while in high school. Students should work with Ms. Newman and their college/university to plan their individual pathway.

Your dual credit courses can add up to more than individual college credits. Through Highland Community College’s General Education Program, students can work toward completing the Kansas Board of Regents Systemwide General Education requirements while still in high school. Completing the required courses across the seven general education areas can help students build toward an Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), or other degree pathway after high school.

Many of the courses available to Oskaloosa students—including College Composition, College Algebra, Trigonometry, Public Speaking, and other general education courses—can fit into these areas. Courses marked with an asterisk on the guide are part of the KBOR Systemwide Transfer Matrix and are designed to transfer among Kansas community colleges and public universities.
