Why do we do it?

1. To grow in our abilities, allowing us to better assist students in their learning goals and develop independence.

2. Para Inservice is a requirement of being a para, per the Kansas State Department of Education.

3. Completion of inservice hours is directly connected to the financial reimbursement we receive from KSDE for paras. If a para does not complete their required inservice hours, we receive less funding. That can negatively impact our ability to provide for our students and their needs.

How many hours do I need to complete?

1. Tier 1 Paras require 20 inservice hours for the school year. You are likely a Tier 1 para if:

   • You began working as a special ed para after August 1, 2022.

   • You have worked fewer than three consecutive years as a SPED para in Kansas

OR

• Have not completed 20 hours of inservice for three consecutive years.

2. Tier 2 Paras require 10 inservice hours for the school year. You are likely a Tier 2 para if:

   • You began working as a special ed para in Kansas before August 1, 2022.

   • You have worked more than three consecutive years as a SPED para in Kansas.

AND

• You’ve completed at least 20 hours of inservice during each of those three years.

3. Tier 3 Paras are not required to complete inservice hours but must:

1. • Hold a current Kansas license or certificate (teaching license, SLP, OT, etc.) and are NOT required to complete inservice hours. Note: A substitute license does NOT exempt you from completing para inservice hours.

   • Still need to complete an inservice log that includes your KS Educator ID and license expiration date.
