Athletes are not to travel to out of town meets on their own. A parent or adult must drive them if not traveling with the team.
All meets in town, transportation is the responsibility of the athlete. JV meets in Maize will have a bus. Varsity out of town meets (except Derby and Maize) will have team transportation
Athletes are not allowed to drive to out of town meets on their own. The team travels together. If a parent is willing to transport an athlete to an out of town meet, prior arrangements need to be made with Coach Rogers drogers@usd259.net
When a meet is over or the team returns from a meet, athletes are expected to be picked up within 30 min of either the end of the meet or the team arrives at East High. If a parent drives a student athlete home from an out of town meet, they MUST make contact with one of the coaches present at the meet to verify they are taking the student athlete home. Coaches are NOT responsible for the transportation of athletes.
The Shocker Pre State Challenge, Kansas Relays, and the 6A State Championships are meets in which the athletes must qualify to participate. Athletes wishing to participate in these meets must be in good standing academically and be on the Varsity Squad.
Athletes are only to participate in one meet per week at maximum.
Only athletes who are competing at a meet will be allowed to leave school early or travel with the team. If a student decides to cut class to attend a meet they are not scheduled to attend, their absences will be unexcused and could be considered TRUANT. Sneaking on to the bus to travel to an out of town meet will result in dismissal from the team.

At the High School level, all ages compete against each other. In Track and Field, there are usually two different types of meets. Varsity and Junior Varsity.. On the Varsity level, per state rule, only three athletes in each event are allowed to compete. All other athletes are then on Junior Varsity. However the athletes on varsity and junior varsity can change from meet to meet. Our team rule has been that the three fastest times, longest distances, or highest heights from week to week are on Varsity the following week. Towards the end of the season, this can become complicated, as coaches will then have to take the athlete’s whole season and career body of work into account when making decisions. The bottom line is, at championship time, it is the coaches' responsibility to put the athletes that they feel can place the highest and qualify for state in the competition.
We are built to compete our best in May. Our league meet (GWAL Championships, May 16th) begins championship season. This meet is the last opportunity for an athlete to be one of the top three times of the season. There are no Junior Varsity races after GWAL. This again, is a state rule not a team rule. The Regional Championships (May 17th) is Varsity only. We are allowed to put our top 3 athletes on our Regional roster, so those athletes are required to come to practice after GWAL.
Only the top 3 athletes/relay teams qualify in each regional as well as the top 4 marks outside the top 3 places in ALL REGIONALS qualify for the state meet at WSU. At the state meet, only the athletes who qualify will be required to attend and will be able to get into the meet for free.
