Reading:

The purpose of reading at home is to build fluency, word recognition, comprehension, and a love for reading.

Help your child improve his or her reading skills by...

• sitting next to your child so you can see the words.

• reading to your child, taking turns, or listening to him or her read to you.

• helping your child sound out words or correct misprounced words.

• asking questions about what he or she read.

• making connections to your own lives.

Reading 20-minutes each day exposes children to a variety of words, vocabulary, and topics. Also, reading routinely improves comprehension and increases standardized test scores.

Math:

Help your child improve his or her math skills by...

• saying positive comments.

• asking questions and/or drawing pictures.

• taking it slow.

• talking about and showing how math is used in the real world like in banking (counting money) and cooking.

• playing games like battleship, dominoes, Monopoly, and many others.
