Reinforce Learning

Talk to your child about what he/she/they learned at school every day. If you see your child struggling or not understanding something, take the time to go over the material with your child and contact the teacher if necessary for additional support.

Stay up-to-date on communication

Whether it is formal announcements from the principal or learning activities from teachers, it is important to read all school communications. Do not hesitate to reach out to staff members at your child's/children's school(s) if you questions or concerns.

Keep your Child's Mental Health in Mind

Talk about feelings

Many students may be reluctant to talk about their feelings, or let on that they're scared or upset by all the changes and uncertainty. And that's okay. Let your child know that you are there for support-and that he/she/they can talk to you about anything. Also, reassure your child that you and the school are doing everything possible to ensure his/her health and safety.

Use calming techniques

When we feel stressed, anxious, or angry, it's important to have a toolbox of calming techniques. Here are some calming techniques to teach your child and to use yourself.

Breathe. Breathing is the best way to feel calmer. Take a deep breath, count to four, and slowly exhale. Repeat.

Relax your body. Drop your shoulders, then flex and release all the muscles in your body, from top to bottom.

Do physical activity. Take a brisk walk, kick a ball, do jumping jacks-physical activity will help you release stress, anxiety, and other negative feelings.
