Financial aid assumes many forms—scholarships, grants, loans & employment. The following resources will help you to have a better understanding of financial aid & the process:
www.kasfaa.org/ (choose the High School Resources tab for a list of resources)
https://studentaid.gov/ (the Understand Aid—Types of Financial Aid tab contains brief descriptions of the different forms of aid)
The term "FAFSA" can conjure up negative thoughts to the point one might question, "Is this worth it?" Fortunately, financial aid offices have worked very hard to make the application for student aid to post-secondary institutions a painless process. Check out the following steps to the financial aid application process:
Get your FSA ID; click on "Get Started" button. NOTE: the FSA ID has replaced the PIN! (this serves as your electronic signature on the FAFSA; ALL students & one parent need an FSA ID; if your parent already has an FSA ID for another child, that FSA ID is sufficient)
Apply for aid electronically (this is the electronic FAFSA; if you have questions while completing the FAFSA, contact the Office of Financial Aid at your chosen institution).
If your child is not yet ready to complete the FAFSA but needs help making post-secondary financial plans, I encourage you to visit https://www.hefwa.org/.
Additionally, check out the Federal Student Aid Estimator to help you understand the funds needed to pay for college.
