What is the STEM-ALP?
The STEM-ALP is an initiative designed to encourage South Dakota secondary students and their teachers to found new STEM-based extracurricular teams for Science Olympiad or select robotics programs for the 2026-27 season. Teachers who are interested in founding teams can submit an application for start-up funding.

There are three features that make Science Olympiad and robotics ideal for the STEM-ALP--
These programs require sustained effort and practice throughout the season to prepare for competition.
These programs rely heavily on collaboration and teamwork to be successful.
These programs hold statewide competitions, and many teams are school-affiliated.
What support is included in "start-up" funding?
What support is included in "start-up" funding?
The "start-up" funding for each successful application will include the following:
Up to $3,500 for expenses including...
materials, supplies, and other equipment
professional development for new coaches
registration fees for team competitions
travel-related expenses for attending regional and/or state competitions
$2,500 first year coach learning stipend (dispersed once learning activities and competition season are completed.)
