The STEM-ALP is an initiative designed to encourage South Dakota secondary students and their teachers to found new STEM-based extracurricular teams for either the Science Olympiad or the VEX Robotics programs for the 2026-27 season. Teachers who are interested in founding teams can submit an application for start-up funding.
There are three features that make Science Olympiad and VEX Robotics ideal for the STEM-ALP--
These programs require sustained effort and practice throughout the season to prepare for competition.
These programs rely heavily on collaboration and teamwork to be successful.
These programs hold statewide competitions, and most teams are school-affiliated.
The "start-up" funding for each successful application will include the following:
Up to $1,500 in materials, supplies, and other equipment
Up to $1,000 in professional development for new coaches
Up to $500 in registration fees for team competitions
Up to $500 in travel-related expenses for attending regional and/or state competitions
$2,500 first year coach learning stipend (dispersed after new team competes in regional or state competition)
