Aligning recruitment with admissions

Workshop Overview

At many universities, graduate student recruitment activities are often the responsibility of administrators in the graduate school or dean’s office.  However, given the importance that prospective graduate students place on relationships with faculty in their decision-making, it is critically important for faculty to work collaboratively with administrators on the development of an equity-minded recruitment plan that accurately reflects the program’s culture, values, and traditions.  Websites, information sessions, and campus visits are also tools that can be leveraged in combination with improved admissions processes to increase applications and yield from minoritized students.

The curriculum for this workshop includes a combination of presentation and activities designed to build attendees’: 1) knowledge about the current state of research on recruitment and 2) raise awareness about how a graduate program’s website can operate as a recruitment tool, and 3) begin developing a plan for recruitment activities that complement more equitable admissions practices.
