URI SMA is now welcoming an SATB accompanied mixed choir this summer, along with our instrumental tracks!
Yes! Please email jessica_peabody@uri.edu for that option.
Students only need spending money for the pool ($5) and dinner/souvenirs on the beach day ($20-50). We'll have two field trip (beach) days for the two week session, so consider sending around $100-$150 if they are staying here for the 2-week session.
Students are traveling across places on campus with their student counselors to ensure safety at all times. Students participate in evening activities that are part of the camp schedule, and sometimes those evening activities are socializing during a movie night in the dorm, or making s/mores at a campfire (with their counselors). Students are trusted to maintain high standards for their decision-making and recognize that their behavior represents SMA (and themselves!).
We hire adult camp counselors who are devoted to creating a safe and inclusive environment for our campers. All counselors are vetted by URI SMA and invited to be counselors for the program based on their professionalism, responsibility, and experience with helping teenage students make positive decisions.
While we do not have a piano ensemble at camp, pianists are encouraged to attend! They are encouraged to play a mallet instrument during large ensemble and have an option to explore playing piano in a jazz ensemble or combo at camp.
Yes! We are building a schedule that allows for the instrumental and choral large ensembles to rehearse at different times.
We do not collect phones/tablets/etc. at camp. Students are not allowed to use devices during rehearsal unless they are using a tablet to read their music. Students are asked to maintain professionalism and respect in terms of device use at camp. If a parent does not want their child to have their phone, they should not send their phone with their child to camp.
Families can attend all concerts, including the faculty recital and the Island Time Steel Band performance. We will film all of the concerts so that those can be shared with families who might not be able to make all of the performances.Â
Students who need to do laundry at SMA can take care of that inside Garrahy Hall (the dorm). URI uses an app called Laundry Connect, and parents/students can download that app when they check into the dorms (for residents). You will need to use a credit card or debit card to load money onto the app so that students can use the machines. $1.50 per wash and $1.50 per dry.
Email them to alacasse@uri.edu and she will add your question (and answer) here!
