Curriculum Considerations for Newcomer SIFE and Sample Unit/Curriculum Plans
In all newcomer programs including summer, breaks, Saturday school, etc., students need to be earning credits towards graduation. Standards based, rigorous instruction is critical in order for SIFE to succeed.
Protocol for Supporting Newcomer SIFE
The following are two curriculum maps that can be implemented in different contexts with newcomer SIFE. Each map includes standards, language objectives and interdisciplinary topics that will allow newcomer SIFE to explore variety of topics while they adapt to their new school.
In each unit on the maps, students will need to read, write, listen, and speak and synthesize their learning into a coherent project.
This curriculum map presents sample themes and objectives that can be used with newcomer SIFE in a short-term summer or vacation instructional program to accelerate their learning and orient them into the school.
This curriculum pacing map presents sample themes that can be used with newcomer SIFE in various school contexts to build the foundation for success in transitioning into content courses that are required for graduation. It will allow teachers to identify common themes across content areas that may be used to create interdisciplinary units.
