Wer wir sind - Who we are
We are a group of URI students – from freshmen to seniors – visiting Germany for two weeks and traveling to Munich, Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Darmstadt, Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Hamburg. Many of us are IEP students preparing for our year abroad stay. But ALL of us learn German at URI.
We will learn about some of Germany’s best-known companies such as Volkswagen, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, MTU, and BMW, but also our partner universities – Braunschweig Technical University and Darmstadt Technical University along with the different research departments there.

Dr. Berka is responsible for building academic programs with exchange partners abroad, internship placements for IEP’s dual degree students, corporate relations, and fundraising for the IEP. Bi-annually the IEP organizes the Colloquium on International Engineering Education.

Dr. Shawna Iula has instructed beginner to intermediate German courses at URI since 2014. She completed her MA in German at the University of Wisconsin, focusing on pedagogy and German literature, and her PhD at URI where she focused on education and motivation in foreign language learning.
Her goal is to share her passion for the German language and culture with her students, help develop any students with the “not a language person” label into multilingual global citizens, and show them how much fun they can have learning new languages and exploring new cultures.

Dr. Lammert is a DAAD Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor. Before coming to URI in the fall of 2018, she worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow and a Postgraduate Research Fellow at Paderborn University in Germany, conducting research on regional variation in the German language, Low German, and multilingualism as well as teaching German language and linguistics.
As a German native with educational and professional experience in both Germany and the US, she is excited about teaching German language and culture at URI and promoting international exchange as a Visiting Professor through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Melissa Schenck serves as the International Engineering Program Coordinator at the University of Rhode Island. In this role, Melissa organizes the IEP’s recruitment and retention efforts, engages with IEP community through social media, and works with program directors and student ambassadors to plan and host events. In addition to having studied Spanish professionally, Melissa also has been learning German for the last 10 years.

Hallo! Mein Name ist Nora. Ich bin 19 Jahre alt .Ich wohne in South Kingstown, RI. Ich komme aus Haiti. Ich spreche Englisch. Ich studiere internationale Beziehungen. Meine Hobbys sind: joggen und shoppen. On this trip I plan to enjoy the regional foods and see all the old and new architecture. Some of the goals for this trip is to eat the most popular regional sausage of each area, see an opera house and send a postcard.
Hallo! Ich heiße Matthew und komme aus den USA. Ich wohne in Rhode Island und studiere an der University of Rhode Island. Ich bin 19 Jahre alt und mein Lieblingsessen ist Schokolade Fondue.
Meine Hobbys sind: Videospiele Spielen, Brettspiel Spielen und Schlafen. Ich studiere Mathematik, Informatik und Deutsch. Ich spreche Englisch und ein bisschen Deutsch.

In Deutschland will ich wissen, wie man in Deutschland reist und ich will auch Deutsch mit Menschen aus Deutschland sprechen.

Hallo! Ich heiße Tatum. Ich komme aus Rhode Island. Ich wohne in Lincoln und Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Ich studiere Wildlife Conservation Biology and minor in Animal Science. Ich bin 22 Jahre alt. I plan on enjoying the food and immersing myself in the culture. I look forward to buying souvenirs. While in Germany, I’d like to try Turkish food, buy a Bierkrug in German, and I want to get lost and find my way back. Hey, getting lost is one way to learn how to navigate and find all the cool stuff! As an environmental student, I look forward to visiting the botanical gardens and museums and while not environmental-related, I’d like to see something about Germany’s aviation history. I’m a sucker for flora and ancient megafauna studies, old architecture, and animal genetics studies.

Servus, ich heiße Andrew. Ich studiere Informatik und Deutsch. Ich habe seit ungefähr dreieinhalb Jahren Deutsch gelernt, aber ich habe noch nie ein deutschsprachiges Land besucht. Ich freue mich, Deutschland zu besuchen. Meine drei
Ziele für diese Reise sind: 1. ich werde meinem Freund eine Postkarte von jeder Stadt schicken, die ich besuche. 2. ich werde zumindest zu einem lokalen Restaurant allein gehen, und ich werde Essen auf deutsch bestellen. 3. ich werde zumindest zu einer Stadt allein reisen. Ich bin begeistert, dass ich die Chance habe, mit vielen Muttersprachlern zu sprechen und zu hören. Ich will alles in Deutschland sehen, wie z.B. Architektur, Berge, Schlösser, und mehr.

Hallo! Ich heiße Daniel Ginsburg und ich komme aus Madison, CT. Ich studiere Maschinenbau und Deutsch. Ich bin 19 Jahre alt und habe Deutsch für 3 Semester studiert. Ich fahre gern Autos. Mein Ziel für diese Reise sind 1) Einen TUBS Studenten über den FSAE Club befragen, 2) Essen in Deutsch betsellen, 3) Einen anderen Ort alleine besuchen, nicht mit der Gruppe. Ich bin gespannt auf diese Reise und möchte viele Automanufaktur/Automuseen sehen.
Hallo, ich heiße Alex. Ich bin 19 Jahre alt und komme aus St. Louis, Missouri. Ich habe Deutsch fast mein ganzes Leben lang gelernt. Meine Oma war meine erste Deutschlehrerin. In meiner Freizeit liebe ich es, Fußball zu schauen und zu spielen und zu wandern. Ich bin begeistert, nach Deutschland zu reisen, weil es mein erste Zeit ausserhalb von Amerika ist. Mein Ziel für diese Reise ist es, zu einem Fußballstadion zu gehen und mit Deutschen zu sprechen.
