Integration of emerging educational technologies
The student teacher integrates educational technologies into classroom practices to support and enrich the teaching, learning, and evaluation of all students as well as to promote communication, collaboration, research, and creation.
As evidence of my competency in the "Integration of Emerging Educational Technologies," I present a lesson plan and a PowerPoint presentation based on the story Pete the Cat: Trip to the Supermarket. I created this PowerPoint during the week of March 3–7. It was used for a lesson I delivered during my Practicum experience in January 2025 at the Elementary School of the University of Puerto Rico. The lesson was designed for a second-grade English class, under the unit My Beautiful Island! and the theme Puerto Rican Food.
Integrating Emergent Educational Technologies can have many benefits in the classroom including increasing student engagement, accessibility, and more dynamic lessons. In my case, it served as a way to solve a problem in my classroom. When I first began my student teaching experience I found that my students did ot want to sit in circle time anymore, which made traditional read-aloud activities difficult. Thankfully, in Teacher Mariell's Classroom we have a smart tv that we use for the classroom. Since they did not want to sit on the floor anymore, I decided to use the smart tv to present the stories that we read so that they could follow me during reading activities while still sitting on their chairs.
By creating a PowerPoint presentation and displaying it on the smart TV, I was able to capture my students' focus and ensure that everyone could clearly see and follow along with the story. This experience demonstrated the importance of being creative and how integrating emergent educational technologies can serve as a tool to help meet the needs of the students in the classroom. It showed me how emerging technologies can not only make lesson more interesting ibut also help meet the students' needs and preferences in an appropriate way.
As evidence of competency #7 "Integration of emerging educational technologies", I offer as evidence an online game based on subject-verb agreement using the app NearPod. This game was made as a requisite for the course Eing4007: Preparation of Materials offered by professor Lillian Mendoza during the first semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. The purpose of creating the game was gaining knowledge on the different apps and technologies that we can use to improve and enrich our teaching practices and students' learning.
With this evidence I demonstrate that I have further developed my domain of integrating educational technologies into classroom practices to support and enrich teaching, learning and evaluation of all students as well as to promote communication and collaboration. For the assignment we were required to choose from a selection of apps studied in the classroom and create an online game. I chose to use the app NearPod for a hypothetical classroom scenario where we would review subject-verb agreement, and do an online quiz/game that gave points to every participant and at the end it would show who had the most points. We used what we learned in the classroom to make learning fun, collaborative and interactive ith the use of quizzes, open ended questions making students active participants and learners, all the while evaluating the students progress on the subject.
Using emergent technologies in the classroom can prove to be a very useful tool. Nowadays we see new technologies emerging all the time. They can help us as teachers to create a new environment in the classroom. Leaving behind monotone class lessons and creating more engaging and innovative ways to teach with educational purpose. Some of the emergent technologies that I have had the opportunity to work with for educational purposes are Google slides and Canvas Presentations and the app Book Creator. I used these technologies in a collaborative project for the course EDPE3013 (Teaching of the Mother Tongue) in the first semester of the 2022-2023 school year. The KOSKO project (Knowing our Students Knowing Ourselves) was completed in collaboration with students from the International Institute of Higher Education Dr. Raul Peña in Paraguay. The purpose of this project was to unify cultures through ICT Information and Communications Technologies between Paraguay and Puerto Rico.
I use a Google slides, Canvas, and Book Creator presentations as evidence because through them I had the opportunity to initiate in the process of communicating, collaborating and creating through the use of educational technologies. For this project the Professor Laura Santiago and Professor Delia Escobar (Professor in charge of the students from Paraguay) divided their classrooms into 5 groups so that 2 groups, one from Puerto Rico and one from Paraguay, would work together and educate each other about their own cultures. This project consisted of three phases. The first phase was presenting ourselves, in this phase we had to talk about ourselves and where we come from. For this phase we decided to make a collaborative powerpoint by using Google slides. Google slides is my favorite emergent technology when it comes to collaborative work. It is easy to use and advantageous. The app allows everyone to work at the same time and it has interesting features like a chat in which you can communicate with your partners while making a presentation. There are also activity reports in which you can observe the changes that have been made and who has worked on what in the presentation. The next phase of the KOSKO project consisted of creating a Cultural ABC. For the Cultural ABC we had to look for artists from different categories with each letter of the alphabet (from Puerto Rico) and do a small biography to educate our fellow Paraguayan colleagues about Puerto Rico. For this second phase we used the app Book Creator. Using the app Book Creator was a challenge because none of our group members had used it before. At first it was a little complicated but after we got the hang of it it was fun. Book creator is an app that allows you to create electronic books of different sizes and with different templates. It also allows you to put audio on each page and it has a feature that the computer reads what its written in the pages to a person. The third phase of the KOSKO project consisted on closing and reflecting about the project. Each member of the group had to reflect individually about the project and for this phase we decided to make a presentation in Canva. In contrast to Google slides, Canva is my favorite emergent technology but this time for creativity. The app contains many templates and elements for different types of projects. It can be used to make PowerPoints, Work sheets, Charts, Posters, Infographics and many others.
I consider that participating in this project was very helpful to me and to my formation as a future professional. I learned and integrated new emergent technologies like Book Creator. I had never seen or heard of the App before but I got the opportunity to learn how to use it. I also applied the previous knowledge that I had of emergent technologies like Google Slides and Canva Presentations. It was really interesting how we got to learn about Paraguayan Culture as well as to teach the people of Paraguay our Puertorican Culture. This proves that it can be useful to me as a future English and preschool teacher, it can help me get out of my comfort zone and create a more dynamic environment in the classroom. It goes without saying that I would definitely love to employ the use of these emergent technologies in the classroom, either creating assessments, promoting collaborative work in the classroom or giving a class using a presentation or a Book created on the app Book Creator. Lastly, I would use Canva the most because it has a feature in which if you identify yourself as a certified educator you have access to many other features from the app.
