Creation of learning environment
The student teacher uses knowledge of student’s behavior to create classroom environments that promote positive social interaction and active participation of all students during the learning.
As evidence of my competency in “Creation of Learning Environment”, I offer an image that exemplifies how I promote active participation and positive social interactions in the classroom. During my practicum experience at the Elementary School of the University of Puerto Rico with the second grade students. Throughout my journey as a student teacher I made sure to exhibit the students' work on the walls in an effort to encourage participation and a positive environment of all students.
While being a student Teacher, I made sure that after every topic discussed in the classroom, I exhibited the students' work on the classroom walls. I consider myself to be an intentional teacher, which means that everything that I do is for a reason. Exhibiting my students' work on the wall can maybe seem unimportant or simply decoration but it is not. Displaying a student's work can give them confidence, can serve to build trust, and pride for their hard work. When the students walk inside the classroom and see their work displayed it gives them a sense of belonging in the classroom and of validation of their efforts and growth.
By exhibiting students' workI demonstrate that I have knowledge of the effects that it has on developing a learning environment. When students see their work being shown off it motivates them. By recognizing that students are motivated by acknowledgment and a sense of belonging, I was able to create a space that promoted positive social interactions and encouraged active participation. Celebrating their efforts not only validates their learning but also promoted a classroom community built on trust, pride, and collaboration. This experience reflects that I recognize and understand that creating a positive environment provides students with confidence and opportunities for growth.
As evidence of competency #5 "Creation of learning environment", I present a final exam and a model on the creation of a linguistically enriched environment. The exam was a requirement of the course Edpe3067: Linguistic Development of the preschool Child. The course was offered by professor María Angrinsoni Malavé in the second semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. The purpose of this exam was to use and demonstrate our knowledge of language development and create and design an environment that promotes language learning.
Through this evidence I showcase my knowledge of student behavior to create classroom environments that promote social interaction and active participation of all students during learning. For this evidence I developed a written exam and a representation of a linguistically enriched classroom environment. A linguistically enriched environment is one that provides children with meaningful experiences that allows them to explore what language is. These meaningful experiences promote the use of the four language arts, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Children develop language when they are exposed to the written language and are provided with opportunities to use it. In this evidence you can appreciate the different strategies that I have knowledge of that we can provide students so that they can develop their language skills, interact with peers and promote participation of all students.
For this competency I offer as evidence a powerpoint presentation. This powerpoint presentation was created for the course EDPR4137 Socio-emotional development of the infant, maternal and preschool child offered by the professor Wanda I. Figueroa Fuentes in the first semester of the 2022-2023 of the school year. This assignment had an objective for the student to present and describe an activity that helps the infant, maternal and preschool child to strengthen their Self-esteem.
I evidence this competency with the activity "Mi estrella '' because through this activity I am starting in the process of the creation of a classroom environment. For this Assignment it was required to present to the class an activity that would strengthen an Infant, Maternal and Preschool child's self esteem. The activity would be taken from the Module: Consejos y 15 actividades para aumentar la autoestima de los niños/niñas by Judith Franch. I chose to present the activity titled "Mi estrella". In this activity it is expected that the teacher or caretaker provides the child with a pre-cropped star with 5 points. The teacher or caretaker would ask the child to think of five persons in their lives that offer them love, sincerity, respect, help and friendship. Afterwards the student can decorate the star and make it his/her own and take it with them always. This way we help the child understand that he/she is not alone, that he/she has people that love, appreciate and worry for them.
Creating an eviroment where our students feel happy and secure is important in order to carry out a good learning experience. This activity includes socio-emotional aspects and skills and through it I understood the importance that self esteem has in children for a good performance un a classroom. I child with high self-esteem develops in a positive way. The child is sure of him/her self, accepts themselves just how they are and knows that they are capable of facing any difficulty that comes their way. Nevertheless, a child with low self esteem confronts emotional and learning poblems and it could bring long term problems in their development. It falls on us as educators to create an enviroment in which the feel comfortable, happy and loved.
Having gone through the experience of creating this activity helped me to re-affirm my vision and the concept that I had of the importance of self-esteem. In the future this will help me to be on the look out of my future student's self-esteem and to create new activities that will alllow me to develop optimal self-esteem in them. Something that I would do differently from this activity is that I would have transformed and detailed other ways in which one could strengthen the different areas of self esteem. I would have done it this way because all of the areas of self-esteem are important and it would have helped me visualize in a better way other necessities that children could have.
