Professional and personal development and performance
The student teacher reflects on professional responsibilities and educational practice, evaluates the effect of his/her decisions and actions on members of the school community (students, parents, administrators, other educational professionals) and the wider community based on ethical principles of his/her profession and specialty; the student teacher actively seeks professional growth.
As evidence of my growth in Competency #10, focusing on "Professional and personal development and performance," I present a certificate that demonstrates my participation in the introductory module of the 21st Century Learning Design (21CLD) curriculum. This module is part of a professional workshop and module focused on developing innovative teaching practices based on current research into 21st-century skills. I completed this module during the second semester of the 2024–2025 academic year on the Microsoft Learn platform.
With this evidence, I demonstrate that I have reflected on professional responsibilities and educational practices, evaluated the effects of my decisions and actions on members of the school community based on my profession and specialty, and that I actively seek professional growth. The module introduced me to the needs of 21st-century stydents, the foundational research behind the 21CLD framework, and the six essential dimensions for modern teaching: collaboration, skilled communication, knowledge construction, self-regulation, real-world problem-solving and innovation, and use of ICT for learning.
Thankfully, with this workshop I learned how to use rubrics and decision trees to evaluate and redesign learning activities, making sure they promote the development of these key skills that they propose. The process of coding a lesson from my own collection using the 21CLD rubrics helped me internalize these concepts and reflect on how to improve my teaching practice. This will directly benefit my future students by ensuring that my instruction is meaningful, intentional, focused on my students, and align with state standards. Learning about the 21CLD curriculum has given me insight on how to teach children in these modern times and allowed me to seek continuos and up to date strategies that supports student learning in an authentic manner. It allows me to analyze my own teaching practices, and make decisions in order to offer meaningful and intentional instruction all the while offering, more effective learning experiences for all students.
As evidence of my growth in competency #10, focusing on "Professional and personal development and performance", I present a certificate earned through participation in a Sign Language workshop. The workshop, offered by Eliara C. Molina Otero and organized by the Council of Students of the College of Education at the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras, took place on November 13, 2023, during the first semester of the 2023-2024 academic year.
With this evidence I can demonstrate that I have reflected on professional responsibilities and educational practices, evaluated the effects of my decisions and actions on members of the school community based on my profession and specialty, and finally, that I seek professional growth. During the workshop Ms. Eliara gave us a brief overview of the history of non-hearing individuals in Puerto Rico and over basic signs and how to use them in an appropriate manner.
Sign language is an undervalued yet important tool when it comes to communication. I sought to learn more about the language given that in Puerto Rico there is an elevating percentage of people that are non-hearing or non-speaking individuals and also because my second major is preschool education; as a preschool teacher knowing basic sign language can help students and myself to communicate even when they cannot produce words and aid them in making connections with visual cues. This will have a positive impact on the families that communicate this way and also help me improve my teaching practices and make them meaningful for my students when I use strategies that they can relate to. Professional growth is something that all professionals should seek in order to improve their practices, go the extra mile, give continuity to what we already know and gain expertise in our respective fields.
It is important for us as future educators to constantly learn new things. We should pursue professional development in every aspect so we can stay up to date with new discoveries in education. Either the methodology, the forms of assessment or new strategies that we can use in our classroom. There is always room for improvement. By seeking professional growth it is possible to have new learning experiences and learn new ways in which we can improve our educational practices. Because of these reasons I offer as evidence a Yoga for Children Workshop in which I participated. The workshop took place on November 17th, 2022 at the Maternal School of the University of Puerto Rico Campus of Río Piedras. The objective of the worksop was for us, future educators to learn about the benefits that yoga can have on children and how to put it into practice. It was offered by teacher Yanitza Lebrón Camacho and as evidence I offer the resources that were used for the workshop and pictures of my participation.
I offer the workshop Yoga for Children as evidence because by participating in it I sought professional growth in my field of study in preschool education. Knowing our childrens emotions and how to manage them is very important for childrens developments. This way we can teach them how to regulate them by themselves. Using yoga as a strategy is a great way to do so. Yoga can benefit children in many ways and it does not limit itself to movements. It can be mixed with aromatherapy, the use of corporeal lotions, tools for massaging, music, games, books, brething exercises and other strategies that can also help children relax and lower their stress levels. Yoga for children has many benefits and it can be used for different reasons. Some of the benefits are that it helps lower anxiety, regulate their emotions and give students sensory breaks when they feel overstimulated. It can also help them develop their motor skills as well as to have control over their emotions.
I know for a fact that Yoga for Children is very useful for regulating children's emotions. I have observed this first hand when working at the maternal school with the PET program(Programa de estudio y trabajo). When children are still high on energy when coming back from the playground, using yoga and aromatherapy has helped them relax and lower that energy. This has motivated me to use Yoga as a tool for teaching in my future classroom. I could integrate these practices in my future classroom for a different number of things, not just for preschool but for English as a second language too. I could use it for regulating their emotions, over stimulation, as games, for channeling energy and even improving children's motor skills. I could also use it as a Total Physical Response technique for second language acquisition and lowering my students Affective Filter. In conclusion, seeking professional growth and development will always be important, it can help us as educators to look for new and innovative ways to teach our future students.
