NZQA Preparing for a digital assessment
What will the room look like?
The hall will have rows of desks facing the front
How do we go into the room?
You will called in and told where to sit.
Who will be there?
A digital supervisor who will deal with log-in and technical issues. Also, standard 'examination' supervisors, who are normally teachers/staff from Upper Hutt College.
There will be students from a range of year levels taking the CAA.
What is an emergency evacuation pack?
In NCEA exams you are not allowed your bag in the room, so you can have an emergency pack (phone that is turned off / bus card, etc in a clear plastic bag under your desk)
When are we allowed to leave?
Not before 45 mins. You will need to put your hand up and wait for the supervisor to come over to you.
When is this?
See the top of this page
During this week there will be a set day for Numeracy, Reading, and Writing.
Can I use my Special Assessment Conditions (SAC)?
Yes, this gets organised in advance. If you have approved SAC conditions then these conditions are provided for you, whether it is a separate room or a reader/writer. Remember all students are working on devices.
What if I am absent on the Numeracy testing day?
Contact your teacher, but you should report to the hall on the catch-up day. The catch-up day is normally the day straight after the final CAA.
What about text-to-speech?
NZQA has recently added text-to-speech technology (‘Polly’) to its online assessment platform. For 2023, NZQA is trialing Polly in the writing (literacy) and numeracy CAAs. As another built-in accessibility feature, Polly will be available to any learner sitting either or both of these assessments, irrespective of SAC eligibility. To take advantage of Polly, learners will need access to headphones for the duration of each assessment session.
