Course Description
Academic Language Support Teaching and Learning Advising are considered as professions distinct from classroom teaching given its major focus on bridging learning through personalized instruction and learning advising in the areas of academic writing, language strategy building, language counseling and overall learning advice. Academic Language Support Teachers and Learning Advisors are considered as key academic or professional staff positions in ODEL and residential secondary/tertiary level institutions. A recent call for learning support aides from the Department of Education lends credence to the work entailed which positions UPOU teacher education programs to address the need for professional training and/or skills development of the current teacher workforce. Thus, developing and capacitating foreseen members of this teaching workforce is aimed at providing quality academic student support services to ensure student retention and success.
This course seeks to initially equip language educators, free-lance online teachers and para-teachers with the basic knowledge and skills as well as a learner-centered disposition entailed by these professions. Upon course completion, these teaching professionals are expected to address the needs of online learners and their learning difficulties in the areas of academic language and management of their learning.
Course Objectives
While engaged in the course, the participant should be able to:
a) explain academic language support and learning advising as a relevant profession
b) practice skills in learner-centered language support and learning advising
c) create a plan of action to establish a community of practice

1. What should I expect of a Short Course under the FEd-CEP?
Our cycle of short courses under the Language and Literacy cluster runs for a brief period (8 weeks - 10 weeks) and through an online blended learning delivery in a small-class-size population.
● Expect 1 course facilitator from UPOU with expertise and extensive experience in K-12 teaching and learning as well as professional development of teachers.
● Expect the course enrollment period depends on the Academic Calendar that will be issued by the FEd-CEP Team.
● Expect the course to run 10 weeks and with a pre-scheduled course orientation a few days before start-of-class. Note the holiday break within this period.
● Expect the short course to provide you with a course guide, a suggested study schedule, a set of course requirements and course materials through the virtual classroom.
● Expect to dedicate 3-6 hours a week of course participation/study time in a virtual classroom (ASCEND), and 4 or more live class sessions by Zoom or GMeet during the 10 week period.

2. Are the short courses free?
● Only courses in pilot-run are for free.
● The upcoming eTL 158 is a PAID course. The applicable fees are:> Application Fee: Php500 payable upon submission of EOI w/ signed FAQs> Course Fee: Php3000
● Note that there will be no option for a refund. Hence, be very certain about your application and enrollment in case approved for admission.
3. Who is eligible to apply for and take the short courses?
● All adult learners with the following educational and work experience are eligible to apply for a short course:i. High School graduates with teaching experienceii. Those who are currently undertaking a 2-year voc-tech program or any university-based program and with teaching experienceiii. A graduate of a 2-year college certificate program, bachelor’s degree, or postgraduate degree program
● Note that the final confirmation of your course enrollment is subject to the approval of the Program Development Associate/Course Coordinator.
4. Can I apply and/or register for more than one course?
● Yes, in case there will be more than 1 course offered. Simply submit another response through the Google Form posted at the UPOU-FEd FB Page for the next cycle of course offering.
● Note that an expression of intent (EOI) through the registration form and payment of application fees do not mean automatic approval for admission.
5. Any other special arrangements in the future?
• The UPOU Faculty of Education through its Continuing Education Program are open to offering any Short Course (Language and Literacy cluster) as part of a school-based in service program with a minimum of 15 teachers/school staff.
• For this arrangement, kindly email fed-communitas@upou.edu.ph at least three (3) months before the scheduled dates.
6. Will this earn me CPD units?
• If you are after CPD units, then the FEd-CEP short courses are not for you. However, UPOU is working towards that direction.
