Peer Mediation

‘Students helping students’. Uplands school provides a mediation service for all its students.

What is Mediation?

Mediation is a process undertaken by a trained mediator to help resolve conflicts. The service is operated by a group of year 12 and 13 students who have undergone special training in conflict resolution, listening and mediation skills. Their role is to help any fellow students in the school to resolve conflicts without the need to involve teachers or other school processes.

What happens in mediation?

The mediators will arrange a time and a private place where both parties in the dispute can meet safely. The mediators will aim to make you feel comfortable and take you through a simple process which aims to help you to resolve your conflict together. Mediators do not make decisions for you but rather work to facilitate both parties toward a win / win resolution to avoid further trouble.

Mediators will be fair

Mediators will do their very best to support you and make the mediation space safe. They will be impartial, they will not judge you and they will not take sides. They will work alongside you to support you to resolve your conflict in a way that works for both parties. The aim is to help make school life more comfortable and enjoyable for you.

A confidential service

Mediation is confidential, which means that issues discussed will be kept private unless there is a serious issue of safety expressed.
