Procedures of teaching
The teaching procedures follow the lesson plan which already conducted earlier. In UNP Laboratory School, I taught in grade 4. Here are the details of the procedures carried out in learning:
Elicit. In this stage, students are asked to recall and test their understanding of the previous material. This stage done through questions and answers, discussions, and activities combined with gamification to motivate students to learn the next material. However, in its implementation, this needs to be adjusted because if the meeting fast the first meeting, based on the cooperating teacher’s advice, this stage can be left blank because there is still no previous material.
Engage. At this stage, the teacher conveys the purpose or objectives of the learning that will be carried out. In this stage, the trigger questions are given so that the students would be curious about the upcoming new lesson.
Explore. In this stage, students have discussions related to the new concepts learned and practice new skills through activities that have been designed by the teacher. The activities provided at this stage will be the basis for further activities at the explain stage which has entered the developing mastery stage.
Explain. At this stage, students are given activities with a higher level of difficulty to test students understanding more deeply. At this stage, the activities provided lead to formative assessment. In this stage, students also given the chance to share their discussion result with other class members and together examine and discuss comprehensively.
Elaborate. This stage is carried out by asking students together to provide real examples of the application of the topics studied, in this case, sequences and series through class discussions and guessing clue games given in the power point presentation displayed. If students are still confused, then one example is given so that students can then provide examples based on their understanding. At this stage, generalization is also carried out related to the topic discussed to ensure that students have understood before continuing with the evaluation/assessment.
Evaluation. This stage is carried out to assess students' understanding of the topics that have been discussed. The results of this evaluation determine whether the meeting or the next meeting needs to be re-discussed on the same topic or not.
Extend. This stage is optional depending on the remaining duration and the achievement of student understanding. If from the remaining time, students need enrichment, then questions or activities with a higher level of difficulty can be given. On the other hand, if students' understanding is still not deep enough, remedial or re- explanation can be done.
Time management and organizing activities
Time management and organization of activities vary depending on the target students, the scope of material/topics to be covered, and the level of difficulty. It also depends on the methods and activities to be provided in each stage of 7E. In the Philippines, social subject has a duration of 40 minutes per meeting and requires 5 meetings per week. With the forty-minutes duration, the elicit stage can be completed in 5 minutes, 5 minutes for the engage stage, 10 minutes for the explore stage, 5 minutes for the explain stage, 10 minutes for the elaborate stage, and 5 minutes for the evaluate stage. However, the duration above is not fixed/patent because, in its application, learning can be readjusted according to the factors mentioned earlier.
However, during the final demo teaching, the learning time given is 1 hour or sixty minutes. With the sixty-minutes duration, the elicit stage can be completed in 5 minutes, 10 minutes for the engage stage, 20 minutes for the explore stage, 10 minutes for the explain stage, 10 minutes for the elaborate stage, and 5 minutes for the evaluate stage.
Classroom management
The activities developed in the lesson plan are all student-centered. Therefore, teacher acts as a facilitator. In addition to providing oral and written instructions on student activity sheets, instructions on each activity are also displayed on power point presentation slides, so students can easily ask questions if some instructions or activities have not been understood. When discussions and activities have begun, the next thing to do is class mastery, in the sense of not staying at one point so that students have easier and faster access to ask questions. When the time allocated for one of the activities has run out, while the student is still not finished, then the provision of additional time can be considered, considering that forcing students to continue to the next stage or activity will only make students more difficult. Therefore, being flexible but sticking to the learning goals set at the beginning is a challenge for a teacher. One thing that is no less important is the provision of ice breaking. I always bring ice breakers from Indonesia, and it turns out the students really like them and learning becomes fun. This needs to be done so that students do not feel bored or stressed with the material provided. Ice breaking can also be related to the material/topic discussed.
Problem-solving while teaching and staying in the designated school
Determining what activities should be designed while still paying attention to the content and level of understanding of students is a challenge. When I first drafted the lesson plan, I repeatedly had to revise. But that's where I finally learned a lot and it was easier to compile the next lesson plan. The key to a successful lesson plan is to suit the students who will be targeted and be able to realize the designed learning objectives, and write lesson plans with good grammar. However, sometimes, some unplanned things can happen, for example students finish too quickly from the allocation of time given so that additional activities need to be given, or vice versa students cannot complete the given activity targets until the given deadline so that some activities eventually need to be replaced, postponed, or skipped with these considerations.
