UNP Laboratory School or UNP LS for short is a basic education institution under the College of Teacher Education of University of Northern Philippines (UNP) which located in Tamag, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. This school was established in 1966 and played part as a training ground for student teachers and a laboratory for educational innovations purpose. The preschool program covers nursery, kindergarten, and preparatory levels; the elementary program covers grades one to six; the secondary program covers grade seven to twelve with various tracks and strands, which are STEM, HUMSS, ABM, and AD. Currently, the principal is Ma’am Aurelia T. Vitamog. All of the subjects here are also taught in English, except for Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies) and Language Education.
Academic Support System
The academic support system here is very good. When I went to school for the first day, I was welcomed well, and introduced to a very kind and extraordinary cooperating teacher. Even though my English is not good, they can understand and always provide explanations and always try to understand what I say and explain.
Furthermore, my cooperative teacher is always helpful and very good at communicating, and when explaining anything is always clear and as good as possible. Therefore, when making lesson plan I didn't have any significant difficulties. Apart from that, for ease of teaching we are provided with wifi facilities, a printer, and are allowed to use a projector.
Furthermore, when teaching, the classes used were quite adequate even though UNP was hit by a devastating earthquake last year. When I observed, the students here were very active and almost all of them were always willing to answer or ask questions. I think this happens because it cannot be separated from good academic support.
Teaching System
UNP Laboratory School organize the learning flow based on the 7Es, namely Elicit, Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate, and Extend (if needed). However, there is a slight difference. UNP Laboratory School, has two sections are not included. However, there is an assignment section that is mandatory for students. This difference has certainly been adjusted to the target students and the goal is to create effective and efficient learning. Related to the 7E stages described earlier, here is an overview of the activities carried out at each stage:
Elicit: reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson
Engage: establishing a purpose for the lesson and presenting examples/instances of the new lesson
Explore: discussing new concept and practicing new skills
Explain: developing mastery (leads to Formative Assessment)
Elaborate: finding practical application of concepts and skills in daily living; generalizing and abstractions about the lesson
Evaluate: assessing students’ progress
Extend: could be remedial or enrichment if needed
