Everything you need to know about successfully onboarding to your new role within the UP Education Network
Welcome to the Boston Public School District!
We are excited to have you join the UP Team in Boston. As a staff member at UP Academy Boston, UP Academy Dorchester, or UP Academy Holland, you will be an employee of Boston Public Schools (BPS). Your pay and benefits will be provided through BPS, and you may be a member of a Boston union, depending on your role.
This site contains everything you need to know to get onboarded through BPS, including BPS onboarding steps and information about your pay, benefits, working conditions, and frequently asked questions.
Get help on the following topics
Onboarding
Complete Immediately**
Obtain your official undergraduate and graduate transcripts (when applicable). If you are obtaining hard copies, they must be original, sealed hard copies. You can also have your institution send BPS electronic copies of your official transcript. Electronic copies must come directly from your institution (it cannot come from you) and must have a registrar signature. Transcripts are required for your onboarding.
*Note*: Electronic transcripts are strongly preferred.
To send electronic copies of your transcript to BPS, please send to the following email address: hiringprocess@bostonpublicschools.org
To send hard copies of your transcript to BPS, please use the following address:
BPS Office of Human Capital
ATT: Office of Human Capital
2300 Washington Street
Roxbury, MA 02119
*Note*: that it can take a few days for universities to send this information so we recommend that you reach out ASAP.
Must be completed in Massachusetts**
State law requires that you undergo a national, fingerprint-based background check before working directly with students. Make an appointment through Identogo and use provider ID#00350000: Make the fingerprinting appointment as soon as possible, as you will need submit your fingerprinting receipt when you attend your BPS welcome session.
If you have already been fingerprinted and cleared through another school district in MA, you can request a Letter of Suitability from your previous employer's HR team in lieu of getting re-fingerprinted. Please reach out to the HR director and have them send the letter to hiringprocess@bostonpublicschools.org.
*Note*: If you are out of state and unable to visit for fingerprinting, there may be options. Please reach out to vnasanga@bostonpublicschools.org for more information.
Apply for a position on TalentEd, BPS's hiring platform. This will not affect your position at UP Academy because you have already been hired by UP but BPS requires your application information in order to begin onboarding and, ultimately, to get paid. See this guide to TalentEd for more detailed information about how to do this. Email talentsupport@upeducationnetwork.org as soon as you apply so that we can hire you into position.
*Note*: If your position is not on TalentEd, please find any available position at any UP Academy and apply for that position. We will hire you into the correct role in the back end of the system.
Once the TalentEd process is complete, you will receive an email from BPS/TalentEd requesting that you formally accept your position. Please accept the position. Sometimes TalentEd emails will go to your spam/junk email so please make sure to check there as well.
Certification (for new staff whose position requires certification) - apply for license; pay for license; upload transcript
BPS cannot process your hiring packet if you have not begun the path towards obtaining your appropriate license.
If you are not licensed but have been hired into a role that requires one, please visit the Certification Resource Site for more information on how to get certified. If you are already certified, send a copy of your license to your hiring manager and to talentsupport@upeducationnetwork.org.
*Note*: If you are not already certified for your role, then you must obtain your certification by March 1, 2024 in order to return for the 2024-2025 school year. The certification process can take several months - UP Talent highly recommends you begin the path to certification as soon as possible, in order to ensure that we can invite you back next school year. If you do not start the certification process, you will not receive a recommitment letter and there is no guarantee that we will be able to get you waivered for the 2024-2025 school year, as waivers require proof of progress toward certification.
If you are not licensed, we will need to apply for a waiver for the 2023-2024 school year ASAP. Please follow the below steps to start the waiver process (more details on the Certification Resource site)
Create an ELAR Account--> Apply for the appropriate licensure--> Pay for licensure--> upload undergraduate transcripts or send to certification@upeducationnetwork.org --> email talentsupport@upeducationnetwork.org and they will apply for your waiver
BPS Hiring Paperwork (mostly online) & BPS Welcome Session
After you are hired through TalentEd, you will receive a checklist via email with online forms to complete. Prioritize completing this paperwork. You cannot schedule a BPS welcome (onboarding) session until you start this paperwork.
*Note*: Staff at UP schools do not need to provide a letter of service.
*Note*: BPS requires a social security card for I-9 documentation or a passport and government issued photo ID. If you do not have a social security card, please request one ASAP.
BPS requires new employees to attend a welcome (onboarding) session to process paperwork. These sessions are in person. Sign up for a welcome session date as soon as you receive the email from BPS. If the date and time slot you want is full, BPS has agreed to make room--reach out to the BPS contact listed. Then email your hiring manager and Talentsupport@upeducationnetwork.org to let them know what day and time you will attend.
During this session, BPS will review all of your paperwork and run your background check. Once your background check is cleared you are able to start working. Please do not show up to any school or professional development until after you are cleared by BPS as you are not allowed to start before this time.
*Note*: If you attend a welcome session after July 15, you are not guaranteed to start and be paid on time. Prioritize attending a session before this date.
