5th semester
Mathematic exploration
DESCRIBING WHAT HAPPEND?
One of the key subjects for IB certification is mathematics. The internal test to accredit the subject is the mathematics exploration, a research project where students choose a mathematics topic and associate it with something from their daily lives. In my case I decided to find the measure of the angles that my dance teacher and I form when we do a choreography.
EXPRESSING FEELINGS
I felt calm because I was doing the exploration on a subject that I like but at the same time I felt frustrated because of the many corrections that the teacher asked me to make.
GENERATING IDEAS
In conclusion, I have to manage my time well because on several occasions I ran out of time to complete the project.
ASKING QUESTIONS
What is the structure of the mathematical exploration?
What are the evaluation criteria?
What is my final score?
Analysis of the play "Saying yes" - Literature
DESCRIBING WHAT HAPPEND?
In Literature class we were reading the play “Decir Si” by the author Griselda Gambaro. While we were reading the play, the teacher was giving us tips on how to write a good literary analysis, these tips were about how to write an introduction, development and conclusion and writing connectors. When we finished reading the play we were asked to write a literary analysis, for this I used the tips that the teacher gave us.
EXPRESSING FEELINGS
I felt relatively calm and happy because I understood what the work was about and I was able to perform the analysis.
GENERATING IDEAS
I have to find a way to improve my writing and avoid using repetitive words.
ASKING QUESTIONS
What is the text about?
What is the length of the analysis?
Reflections about IB Evaluations
DESCRIBING WHAT HAPPEND?
Prior to our external IB exams, the school gives us students some sort of mock IB exams. These mock exams are for IB certification subjects, the subjects they certify are mathematics, literature and English. In English B class the teacher asked us to reflect on these mock exams. The teacher asked us to include in our reflection how we felt during the mock exams and what we can do to improve.
EXPRESSING FEELINGS
I can't tell you how I felt doing this activity, I had a mixture of emotions inside me.
GENERATING IDEAS
As I mentioned in my reflection I have to review some things like vocabulary and grammatical structures for the real external tests.
ASKING QUESTIONS
How did I feel during the test simulation?
What should I improve to have good results?
DESCRIBING WHAT HAPPEND?
In English B class, the teacher asked us to write an argumentative essay on a topic of interest to us but at the same time a topic of relevance. After much thought I decided to write my essay on music but focusing on whether modern music is good or bad for society. This topic became interesting to me because lately it is something that generates a lot of controversy.
EXPRESSING FEELINGS
In this activity I felt good, relaxed and calm because I was writing an essay on a topic I like.
GENERATING IDEAS
As a conclusion of this work I have to say that modern music is neither good nor bad for society. It is only a matter of respecting the tastes of others.
ASKING QUESTIONS
What am I going to talk about in the essay?
How much should I write?
DESCRIBING WHAT HAPPEND?
In the Prototype Design class one of our final projects was to make a Gordian knot on the Onshape platform. The first thing we did was to design each of the pieces of the knot, for this the teacher shared with us the plans of each piece, since we had the pieces we had to make the assembly, the final result is shown in the attached evidences.
EXPRESSING FEELINGS
I felt good putting the pieces together but when we had to assemble it, I got stressed because it didn't fit the way I wanted it to.
GENERATING IDEAS
I should further explore the assembly functions of the Onshape platform.
ASKING QUESTIONS
What is a Gordian knot?
How to assemble the pieces?
DESCRIBING WHAT HAPPEND?
In the Prototype Design class one of our final assignments was to make an assembly of a puppy and its bone. The first thing we did was to design each of the pieces of the assembly, the pieces were the dog, the bone, the crank and the box. for the design of the pieces the teacher shared with us the plan of each piece, then we made the assembly, the intention was that with the crank the dog and the bone would go from top to bottom.
EXPRESSING FEELINGS
Designing the pieces was not difficult, but where I did feel stressed was in the assembly because it did not look the way I wanted it to.
GENERATING IDEAS
I must investigate on my own how the assemblies work on the Onshape platform.
ASKING QUESTIONS
What is the mechanism that the assembly must have?
Do I have to make the dog and the bone or can I make other figures?
These last two years of my life have not been easy at all because of academic and personal obstacles. For this reflection I would like to focus more on the academic obstacles, an example of these is that having too much homework I did not have time to study the subjects that certify the IB. These subjects are English literature and mathematics. Another obstacle I had was trying to understand each of the projects to certify each subject. Another obstacle I had was when we took the mock exams in math, English and literature. When I took these mock exams I felt very nervous and confused since they were my first approach to the IB external tests. As we did more mock exams I felt much better and more prepared for the real IB external tests. However when it came to the real IB tests I was very confused because nothing of what I studied came, that made me feel disappointed and frustrated, in spite of this I was able to complete my tests I just hope I do well. Despite these obstacles, I was able to develop certain skills which I know will help me in life, one of these skills is analysis and reflection, when I started high school I did not have these skills but thanks to the IB internal assessments I can now develop any type of analysis or reflection. There are other skills which I developed thanks to my teachers, such as being inquisitive, open-minded, listening and accepting of others.
