About the Program

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sociology Program revision in 2011 was done in order to keep pace with the accelerated social changes and developments in the local and international settings. The revision accommodated new courses pertaining to the most recent social issues and current developments in Sociology.

As the world turns into a global village, new information and new ideas continuously pour in brought about, among others, by the ASEAN Economic Integration in 2015. In the Philippines, curricular changes have become more inevitable with the implementation of the K-12 program together with UP’s internationalization program. With these changes in the Philippine educational landscape and in Sociology as a field, there is a need to revise the BA Sociology Program.

The revision done in 2018 is benchmarked on the Policies, Standards and Guidelines for Bachelor of Arts in Sociology issued by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) which specifies the core competencies expected of BA Sociology graduates in the Philippines. Both the proposed BA Sociology program and the suggested CHED BA Sociology curriculum require almost the same Sociology courses. The salient difference between the two is that the 2018 revision recognizes the importance of grounding BA Sociology students in other Social Science disciplines, hence, the inclusion of other Social Science courses in the proposed program.

The 2018 revised curriculum aims to help students develop relevant skills for lifelong learning and occupational flexibility that will eventually place them on a more competitive advantage. Furthermore, the proposed revision of BA Sociology Program will be geared towards a range of knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that will reflect greater learning and teaching ability. The revision will also ensure that students are able to conduct sociological research enhanced by other social science disciplines.

The BA Sociology Curriculum (2018) is geared towards producing graduates who shall be:
