Formulation of the Philippine Strategy for Sustainable Development initiated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources
The global advocacy on sustainable development intensified when the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was created in 2015 by the United Nations, of which the country actively participates.
In support of the country’s efforts toward sustainable development, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) has long been advocating environmental protection and climate change mitigation in consideration of the Filipino’s social welfare. Various units in the university have taken actions in incorporating sustainability in national development.
College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology
Done several socio-economic and environmental assessments studies in various biofuels systems and agriculture.
College of Forestry and Natural Resources
Conducted rigorous training programs on carbon sequestration potentials of different trees and forest ecosystems and their significance to related laws and programs of the government
College of Agriculture and Food Science
Works on carbon and energy footprint of various crops.
School of Environmental Science and Management
Offers a course on industrial ecology and a special topic on life cycle assessment.
College of Public Affairs and Development
Its research program focuses on climate change adaptation; social research policy, and sustainability studies.
College of Arts and Sciences
Areas for research endeavors of the college include conservation and sustainability, habitat restoration, resources assessment, vulnerability assessment, diversity, etc.
College of Human Ecology
Conducts researches and action projects, and extends technical assistance under the Social Development and Management Program (SDMP), which aims to develop and empower social organizations and institutions under its thrusts on Social Technologies for Institution Building, Disaster and Risk Management, and Consumer Protection, Education, and Satisfaction.
College of Economics and Management
The college conducts R&E activities in economics, agricultural and applied economics, and agribusiness management focused on promoting efficient and competitive economic activities, improving income distribution, protecting the environment, and managing natural resources.
In the aim of consolidating and accelerating the initiative of the different units of the university towards sustainable development coupled with the growing need from different industries and government agencies on LCA researches and related studies, the UPLB Interdisciplinary Life Cycle Assessment Laboratory (UPLB-ILCAL), was formed on October 20, 2017 by virtue of Administrative Order No. 246. Recognizing the fact that Life Cycle Assessment is an interdisciplinary discipline with wide variety of applications, UPLB-ILCAL is composed of experts from different fields in the University.
A brainchild of Dr. Rex B. Demafelis - Professor 12 and University Scientist - UPLB ILCAL focuses on studying the environmental footprint of products using the Life Cycle Assessment method.
