UNION OF JOURNALISTS OF THE PHILIPPINES-UP
The Union of Journalists of the Philippines - UP (UJP-UP) is a socio-political academic organization which practices advocacy journalism and actively engages in the fight for press freedom in the country. We are the student arm of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), one of the leading media guilds in Asia. We train our members to go beyond their horizons and tell the stories of society’s underrepresented sectors.Founded on September 8, 1988, UJP-UP is set to continue its brand of pro-masses and pro-student activities in its 32nd year. Some of our activities include Journalism Summit (JS) and Media Literacy (ML) seminars for high school students all over the country, and our major campaign is Break Free, a month-long protest to raise awareness on pertinent media and national issues, and call for the end of the culture of impunity in the Philippines, inline with the annual commemoration of the Ampatuan massacre.
UP JOURNALISM CLUB
The University of the Philippines Journalism Club (UPJC) is a nonaligned, nonprofit academic organization based in the UP College of Mass Communication. Founded in 1954, the organization is committed to the promotion of professional and ethical standards in journalism through its tradition of critical thought and action. Our flagship program, the Community Journalism Workshop, provides needs- and context-based journalistic training to schools and communities which request it. Our official news publication, Krisis, releases in-depth reports and analytical pieces on the most pertinent issues within and outside the university. Among our other projects are seminars on media literacy and fora on pertinent media issues. We aspire to provide hands-on and continuous avenues of training to further the formation of educated and skilled media practitioners who uphold the principles of ethical and principled journalism. Beyond this, we also work to create deep friendships and provide a community for future movers of the media industry. For 66 years and counting, UPJC has stood witness to the university’s history and produced numerous notable alumni in fields of mass communication, academe and politics. UPJC was recognized as the best organization in UP College of Mass Communication in 2016 and 2017 and was acknowledged by the UP Office of Student Activities as the student-run organization with the most number of public service initiatives in 2017.
TINIG NG PLARIDEL
Tinig ng Plaridel (TNP) is the official student publication of the College of Mass Communication. Now in its 42nd year, it has consistently been a bastion of reliable information, serving not only to the college, but to the university at large. It prides itself in trailblazing paths in campus journalism with its real-time coverage of the student council elections through Botong Isko, and its reportage of athletes competing in the annual UAAP championship. Staffers of TNP are taught how to amplify the voices of the underrepresented and document these with dauntless skill and professionalism. They are imbued with journalistic principles, grounded through ethical news-gathering, writing and publication. Founded in the most repressive times of the Marcos regime, TNP stood fearlessly and fought for press freedom — an advocacy it has retained up to today. It continues its truth-telling through news and feature writing, sports coverage, photography, graphics, and multimedia outputs.
